I'm in the same position, haven't heard back from UF and got the email you're talking about. Does anyone know if this means we're on the waitlist?

i think thats what it looks like.

I'd imagine so. Here's why...

Not taking FSU into account, but looking at schools that have the May 15th deadline.....

Every year people pick the school that they want at the May 15th deadline, but there are several people who picked one school but were waitlisted at another school on their list. So say that waitlist was their first choice, you'll find many people who ended up picking school A on May 15th ended up giving it up to go to school B past May 15th because they just got off the waitlist.

REL once explained this more eloquently. But essentially it is like a back and forth game where the ball keeps bouncing in different directions. You are still allowed to accept the waitlist position that is offered and allowed to drop at the other school past the May 15th deadline.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be too different for the earlier schools like FSU, especially considering some schools accept right up until the first week of class in some rare instances.

According to AAMC Traffic Rules:
- Once an applicant MATRICULATES into an MD Program no other MD Program can make an offer of acceptance to that applicant (now student).
- If an applicant attends an orientation for a school that is contiguous with the starting date of that medical program then they are considered matriculated. (So if you attend an orientation on Thursday & Friday and the curriculum begins on the following Monday, your are considered matriculated and therefore off limits to other programs).
- If you attend an early orientation which is not "connected" to the first day of the curriculum you are still eligible to receive offers of acceptance until you begin class somewhere.
- Most schools will take about half of their final class off their wait lists after the May 15 multiple acceptance deadline. This is typical in Florida as there are so many quality programs.

Thanks REL! Please disregard our talk of anything other than Florida schools...we try to keep it comical in this thread. 🙂

Thanks for the clarification.

Oh, stop pretending you don't like it. I saw you wearing that shirt with a heart-shaped picture of you and I at the beach, not to mention the "I Love Durham" bumper sticker you bought.

Just take a deep breath, caveman. It's all going to be ok. Tell Burnsie that you're going out for some air, and then don't ever come back.... :meanie:

Easy. That's when you stopped hanging out with me.

Aren't you supposed to be paying attention in some sort of meeting?

Quite true.

Right now I'm meeting a yogurt in the hospital cafeteria.

Perhaps she'll find someone outside of the Bowling alley to hitch a ride with as she crosses the border from the burns patrol. :laugh :

Ok, I better go in a few minutes. Where did you even get easy access to the hospital computers?? 😉

I'm just messing with you Unfrozen.

Anyone who attends orientation or begins classes at another medical school prior to August 15th (our orientation date) will be withdrawn from further consideration for our program.

Thast from the UF letter. Hope that helps with your confusion, turq. So if you start the FSU program, I think you are out of the running for UF.

WooooooooooHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! So my friend just got in the acceptable part of the waitlist pool at USF. Top 1/3 of the waitlist. So hopefully he'll be hearing in another Month to 1.5 Months. I'm sooooo excited.

P.S. This is his 3rd time applying. Never lose hope!!!!!

im just wondering, does miami have some sort of pre-entry summer program so students can brush up their skills?

Tell him congrats from MrBurns!!! He won't know what or who you're talking about, but don't clarify what you mean; it makes it more fun that way. Then continuously chastise him for not being a part of this thread until he relents and reluctantly joins conversations about chocolate, Red Tide, and yrodri's penchent for counter-clockwise gyrations.

Alright ... I was supposed to hear back from Miami on March 15th (what they told us on interview day) and I still haven't heard a peep ... if I don't hear back by tomorrow afternoon I was thinking about calling the Admissions Office. Is this a bad idea?

And I forgot to add that I emailed Dr. Hinkley and he didn't reply. :scared:
Dr. Hinkley is generally very good about writing people back. If you just e-mailed him today or yesterday, I'd give it until the end of the week. If by Friday you haven't heard then I'd give the admissions office a call (since you might here tomorrow evening or thursday morning since wednesday afternoon is when the committee meets). good luck!

I don't think so. According to their site for last year's entering freshmen, they had some biochem stuff you could study, but that was about it.

yeah, I don't think they do. The students would have probably mentioned it during the student session of the interview. Just brush up on your biochem since that's what we start with!

Good Luck InFlames. I remember I emailed Dr. H bc I hadn't heard by the date he said I would and I didn't hear from him for a few days until he wrote back with an acceptance! Good Luck! :luck:

thanks guys...does anybody happen to have that number for parking services to be put on the waitlist for a parking spot?

Thanks for the good luck props. It makes me want to do my super happy dance.

Well the thing is...I got that email but havent heard a UF response. I was wondering if that was an email sent out to all hold applicants.

I would give Dr. H another few days to respond also. Miami got really behind last fall because of the hurricanes, and I'm not sure that they ever got back on schedule. Wait until Mon., and if you still haven't heard, then give them a call. Good luck! 🙂

OK, so I got my letter from UF yesterday and I'm 'on hold'. Does anyone know the name of the Chair or the Dean of admissions. I want to write an LOI but I'm not sure who to address it to (or where exactly). If anyone can help I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I'm wondering if anyone knows whether Miami is still sending invitations for interviews? I sent my secondary in the first week of December (decided late to apply there), and I haven't heard anything from them since.

On their status check site, it says, "Your file is complete and is currently being evaluated by the Admissions Committee for the possibility of an interview. Evaluation can be a lengthy process depending on the number of files concurrently under review. Check later to see when your file completes the evaluation process."

Thank you for any help.

I heard they are interviewing every Monday and Friday until April 17th, but it is for a position on the alternate spot. Just a couple of weeks ago my status changed from 'undergoing file evaluation' to the 'ranked list', but I submitted around October. When they say a lengthy process, they're not kidding lol. But my friend went pretty quick from evaluation to the ranked list, so i guess it just depends. Good luck! :luck: :luck:

Arsenic posted some answers to questions about UMiami from Dr. Hinkley on another thread recently: Basically, Dr. Hinkley said that the "under evaluation" process and duration of time is highly variable. Essentially, three independent reviewers look over your file and give you a numerical score (based on certain number of points for MCAT, GPA, clinical experience, life experience, LOR, etc.). So how long you are "under evaluation" depends on how quickly your 3 file reviewers review your file. I was complete for 4 months, under evaluation for about 2 months (maybe 1.5 months), and then on the ranked list for about a week or so. Dr. Hinkley did say that some people on the ranked list are periodically rejected, so it's not as if everyone gets on the ranked list. :luck: Good Luck :luck:

Also, I wanted to say that the status page is updated sporadically. It still says I am on the ranked list, when, in fact, I have already interviewed!

Ira Gessner. Robyn is the head of the admissions office, but Dr. Gessner is the dean.

Caveman, you missed quite the concert last night. There's nothing quite like seeing headbanging men wearing farm animal masks. Don't be jealous.

I caved ... called this morning. The lady in the Admissions Office said that they were unable to meet last week, and that everyone that was supposed to hear back on March 15th should hear back by the end of next week, at the latest. AWESOME.

Welp, the verdict is in from Miami and .... MORE WAITING. C*CK. B*LLS.

Is the "alternate list" the same as the "waitlist"? Does anyone know how much it moves? Assuming I send them a letter...

Yes, I think the alternate list is the waitlist. Your chances on the waitlist are approximately 75%.

Ok, I have some questions:

1)Does USF/UM have an orthopedic surgery and/or radiation oncology residency programs?

2)Does the Boca campus of UM offer many research opportunities or do you have to be at the Miami campus to do research?

Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated.

dunno squat about ortho, but USF and UM both have ****ty rad onc residency programs. if you want to do radonc in FL, UF is the place to be a resident. but that doesn't matter for med school, you realize?

no clue about boca/miami diff. all i know is south beach is in miami, so to miami I go...

Is anyone going down to FAU second look for no apparent reason?

I was gonna, but then realized the $400 plane ticket to West Palm could be used more effectively....on booze.

I'm going unfrozen....at least that's the plan. Hopefully I'll get into the Miami campus, but just in case...I might as well see the Boca campus.

UM has a rad onc residency program and a very good orthopedic surgery residency program. You could have probably gotten this info anyway from the Jackson Memorial Hospital website. Go there for more information.

My new career goal is to be on an adcom....I really like to have answers, if I were on an adcom...I'd have ALL the answers!!

First person I'm admitting is Inflames...I like your style (this judgement was based solely on your avatar).

I just booked a multitude of tickets that will have me out of boston for the entire spring. I might as well get some free pasta at FAU while I'm at it.
