You want irritating? the invisible song by g(cl)ay aiken. Why they play that at the UM gym is beyond me. I mean you're laying there in a precariously vulnerable position doing abdominal exercies before the assembled masses and that song comes on...its just disturbing if you ask me.

Wow im bored...im getting lunch soon.

I totally remember them playing outdated music at the gym. Is it still as crowded as ever? I remember that the only way to be able to use an elliptical trainer was to "Reserve" it, a day in advance AND you could only reserve it for a 30 min slot. When I transferred schools and tried to make an appt to reserve an elliptical trainer, they looked at me like I was insane.

Oh and do the guys still strut around the gym with their D&G bandanas? That used to kill me!

Ha. Back to religion and evolution...my dad is a minister...a close-minded one at that! When I told him I believed in evolution about 3 months ago...his response was "YOU BELIEVE EVERYTHING COMES FROM A CELL?!?!?!?!"....ummm....YEAH!!!! I basically told him he was an idiot and he tried to perform an exorcism...it was quite the scene.

Runner, what religion are you? I'm trying to find a new religion, I was raised Baptist, but I can't handle people who don't believe in evolution and think drinking (non-excessively) is a sin!! I need something that is more up-to-date!!

You don't have to change your religion unless you just really want to do that, McMD. There *are* moderate Baptists. You just don't see or hear of them as much here in the South. Here's an article you might find interesting: http://www.religion-online.org/showarticle.asp?title=2614

Nighty-night, Burnsie. Sleep tight, and don't let the MEGALODONS bite!!!! Bwah hah hah hah!!!!

I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that there are extremists and tolerant people in almost every religion so you don't necessarily have to renounce yours completely. Although granted Southern Baptists are probably the most fundamental Christians I've met and certainly there are general trends. But I know how you feel. I wasn't raised in a particular religion- my dad was raised very Catholic (I say was because he doesn't associate himself with Christianity anymore) and my mom is Jewish- so I just kind of made up my own beliefs as I went along. The hardest thing was trying to find an established religion that fit my beliefs (I tried developing other beliefs and just couldn't do it) and realizing that there are people everywhere that take everything in the Bible or other religious doctrine to be infallible/not open to other interpretations and are close-minded as a result of it. I would just try out different churches and see which one fits you and your ideals the best, regardless of denomination.

See, THIS is why you keep getting invitations to join churches! You're evil. 🙂

Edit: haha, okay I just realized people might misinterpet my comment as saying that churches are evil, which was the opposite of what I meant. Argh...we should never have conversations about anything significant on this thread. So, I give you this:

It was a tazmanian jackal, or some weird ass kangaroo Hurricane.. I'm not quite sure what the hell that thing was, I still remember the odd picture though.

In any case, I would probably bring back the "Trilobite," the first creature to have some sort of an "eye." Then I would proceed to say something "cute" along the lines of, "I see your eye!"

Ah, the possibilities.

Sure, as long as you take me to class in a helo.

I was always a fan of Super Grover, personally.

Yeah runner I'm still here, graduating in just five more weeks. I had Herbert for Bio160. His tests were all the same year to year. Not that it matters anymore, but I cant believe I got a B in that class....I refused to memorize past tests because for some reason I couldnt believe anyone would be so dumb as to ask the same questions every semester

Dude, I had all the doozies at UM- O'Reilly, Veliz, Ashkenazi, Wilson... Who did I get a B from? Herbert! Shame of my life, until I got an N on the MCAT writing sample. My friends actually made fun of me. Stupid, stupid class.

Amusingly enough, it was about evolution for the most part, and as an unfrozencaveman, I like to think I know a little something about that.

Anyway I think I smell a class trip to Dinosaur Adventure Land. Or we could do Holy Land in Orlando. "Visit Jerusalem.... In Orlando!"

Oooh! If we're going to Orlando, I want to go to Cassadaga! (I never even knew this place existed).

Jerusalem in Orlando? I'm down, but only if we can go to the West Bank, which I guess in this case would be Daytona.

Heh.

McMD,

My dad is a Southern Baptist minister, too. He's more moderate and believes in evolution and the ordination of women. Unfortunately, his views have really hurt his career.

lollll

Veliz eh? I heard Veliz severed one of his testicles in front of one of his classes to demonstrate his extreme tolerance for pain.

On a lighter note, I can't wait till they bring back the white oreos that they flaunt during christmas.

You're not alone - my freshman year, I got a B+ in Herbert's evolution and biodiversity class. I attended every class, took notes, but actually studied for the tests rather than memorize the old exams. Yeah, I looked at 'em, but there were so many! In retrospect, I shoulda used all those hours that I was actually in class (there were just a few of us!) and study those old exams. What an idiot Herbert is. Can't believe I took him for Cell Molec, and then again for Physiology.

Okay, I am ranting. Anyone feel the same way? Oh, and I hated the undergrad bio program at UM. ANyone with me on that?

Haha, obviously I'm bitter. Maybe that's because I didn't get into UM Med after killing myself at UM Undergrad and at the med campus like every other day and every summer. JERKS! Ooooh, i have a few words for UM when the alumni association calls for donations... :meanie:

My fave lab was Bio 2 lab at UM. I had the best TA ever! 👍 It was when I knew for sure that I wanted to pursue a career in science.

Veliz was a great guy. UM students were such whiners... (not you Syringe-- I got rejected from my undergrad alma too for med school, and they can suck it).

Still, of my postbacc friends-- from Northwestern, Duke, and Brown, all thought the sciences at UM rocked. Definitely some of the best professors I ever had.

PS-- Runner- great other thread. Florida rocks.

thanks! I didn't really think anyone would post on it, but its actually turned out to be kinda funny! Furthermore, it shows that without a doubt, FL is the COOLEST state in the US 😉

PS - I was hoping my avatar might be a topic starter in the other thread. I mean, if I saw someone with an avatar like mine, I'd prob say "wtf is up with your avatar? And what is Red Tide?" I'm kinda disappointed--I was looking for some free publicity for our band.

And more importantly, Runner, you and Unfrozen, Burnsie, and Yodri, and Q are the coolest people in the whole country. 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Oops forgot to add McMD and Deuist and A-man over in the MCAT forum moderating...  Not to mention Dieslpetrlgirl.

Deuist....that's awesome that your dad believes in reality!! haha.

Runner, I was going to comment on your amazing avatar in the other thread, but didn't get a chance to. I've been so busy lately...that's probably why Guju FORGOT to add me to the 'coolest' list!!

 That's beautiful. So do you believe in your own experimental evidence???

Well I don't believe in the evolution of man from a common primate ancestor, but what I'm doing in my lab is studying if MHC variation in frogs shows evidence of natural selection, and I have no problem reconciling that. I think evolution is a broad term and I don't reject some aspects of but I do reject some aspects of it that conflict with my faith.

So you'd say microevolution is true, but not macro? Ok, fair enough. I don't really have any vested interest in whether people believe in macroevolution (although I disagree with people who don't). It's not MY theory, after all, so I don't take it personally if people don't like it. I just want people to understand what it is they're disagreeing with, that's all. Some of the anti-evolution crowd is just ridiculous, like Phillip Johnson. I'm not impressed with him at all. There is at least one pro-ID author who's actually worth reading IMO. He's a biochemist....Behe, that's his name. I don't agree with him, but at least he seems like a reasonable person.

Behe does a pretty decent job of translating his arguments into layman's terms, but he goes out on a limb sometimes. I blame him for making intelligent design sound so reasonable. Which it is for a religion/philosophy, it's the whole trying to pass it off as science thing that is troublesome.

Anyway, don't you Floridians have anything more productive to talk about than evolution/creationism? Don't y'all need to be rehearsing in the recording studio or something?

Also, and I think unfrozen would agree with me, but at least one (if not more) of your tracks should be commemoratively entitled "Cobra" after the movie of the same name. The interpretative dance for that should be priceless.

I'm no anti-evolutionary zealot. No one knows the answer to the eternal question of how we got here, and as humans we try to explain it. Some explain it through science and evidence, some through religious beliefs, and its all a matter of personal choice, so I don't think either side should assume there is one right answer because none of us were around when everything got here and all beliefs are just supposition based on either evidence or faith. Did God create every creature in its present form? I don't know. I don't think so, and I don't doubt the presence of evolutionary processes in life. However, I can't see speciation of finches or things that are supposed to be million year old skeletons and reconcile to myself that something so different from the rest of the animal kingdom wasn't made specially by a higher power. I believe it because I have faith and faith can't be backed by evidence because it is the belief in something not beheld so it pretty much is inherently unreasonable, by human logic at least.

my roomate doesn't believe in science. he calls it magic. he majored in religion.

just thought i'd throw that out there.

That would be a cool perspective to have, I should try it

I did like Veliz, unfrozen, he wrote me a great letter - I was just commenting about his impressive threshold for pain.

Science is the work of the devil. So are fossils. He layed the fossils around in hopes of confusing us. Mission accomplished. That landmark was the first Easter-esque scavenger hunt in history.

Whats next? Dinosaurs having feathers!?

Sounds like our trip to Dinosaur Lies Park is shaping up to be a real barn-burner.

I like to think aspects of science are magic as well. Kirchhoff's rules? F-ing sourcery. They never work.

And as for the Cobra single, consider it done. Here's what I'm thinking for the video-- me making striking forearm cobras in a field of robots, and the camera cuts frenetically to the robots and back to me. The spanish language is the same, but in that one, it sometimes cuts to random shots of Yrodri, and he yells stuff like "Sabor!"

Note, I just reread that and instead of "robots" I had accidentally written "roboyce". Not nearly as good.

Yeah, very true. I think you can actually program robots to dance...me, not so much. I can't even do the robot.

I think conceptually, you should go for something along the lines of Herbie Hancock's Rockit video...ah, showing my age once again.

You say that like it's a bad thing...

Funny story: When drawing blood from a patient at the VA hospital, the pt lamented the fact that he was going to look like a drug dealer with all the needlesticks he'd had. I then joked "yeah, but you won't have had any of the fun." Then he looked at me warily and said "I wouldn't know..." and I followed it up with "...so I hear." Unfortunately it was too late, since clearly he had already outed me. Maybe I should have intentionally missed on the stick so it didn't look like I knew what I was doing.

Why do people have to come in here and start talking about medicine and ruin a perfectly good off-topic conversation! 🙂

OK, I am going to talk about Florida schools. So, has anyone received their financial aid package from USF? Just wondering.
