And see that's the thing...I went to a high school like that, and I can tell you that Duke was completely different, so much more down-to-earth and friendly (I hated my high school but I loved Duke). Sure there are rich kids who get whatever they want, but I really think they are the minority here. 75% of students are on financial aid. The biggest problem is what we talked about at dinner the other night, how most colleges are situated in communities with similar socioeconomic statuses; Yale loves new Haven and New Haven loves Yale, for example (at least, that's what I hear). When the median household income in your largely-minority community is less than the tuition of your mostly-white school (although Duke has the largest percentage of minorities of any private school, something the media always neglects to mention), there's inevitably going to be tension. It's really unfortunate, and I'm just not quite sure how to change that.

Penn had a similar problem, until they gentrified the entire neighborhood, opened up a Gap, and now rich and poor walk hand in hand through the modern utopia that is West Philadelphia.

I dont think the idea of poor equals virtuous, rich equals dingus is going away anytime soon. For one, it's all over SDN-- how many posts are qualified with "I'm paying for all of this, so I can speak to how great I am", or "I went to state school because I'm not a snob?" So, you'll get it on macro and micro levels all over the place.

It's got to be frustrating to see your school be dragged through the mud, and have that be your primary affilation for a while. And it really actually annoys me to see people propogating crap to reflect poorly on people that have nothing to do with anything. I read the other day an article on men's sports teams, military, wall street firms, fraternities, all "average guys", and how they engage in gang rape as a proxy to essentially have sex with each other, which basically implied that all men are potentially rapists. Maybe I have high standards, but I wouldnt consider all the men I know accomplished for not having gang raped anyone.

roboyce said:
Yeah, seriously...I mean they could be saying stuff like "what am I going to do with my second Range Rover?"

I feel like my last post implied that I had standards for the men I hang out with. This is not really true.

I might drive on your lawn.

So I was just reading the FSU Response thread and they were lamenting the lack of communication from FSU, and then someone posted this:

Aaaand welcome to the South. Then you have to leave it there and put it up on blocks.

Mindless? It's really too bad you can't see who is spying on this thing.

Please don't hit any of the (1) stray dogs under the shootin' car (2) my brother's collection of rare PBR cans or (3) my mom's flowers - yes the ones in the oversized tire.

That's right, I'm hijacking this thread (well maybe just this page..) :meanie:
Conspiracy!!
Leak!!! 😡 Runner, I trusted you and what do you do? Copy my comments onto here. I said "don't tell them" which include unfrozen. 😉

Yeah, I always forget that other people might be reading this.

Anyway, I was curious to see what last year's (and 04, 03, etc) FL students were like, so I did a search to find the "FL thread" for other years and guess what? There hasn't been another thread like ours! Sure they had some "Florida Schools" threads, but none of them had more than 300 posts. I'm quite proud of us  Although, I wonder if that fact makes our cycle of applicants the dorkiest 🙄 Hmmm

EDIT: Has anyone had jury duty? What's it like? I have it on Monday.

Hey now, if they're going to join in our mindless chatter, tell them to do it with enthusiasm, not derision! Be proud that your state has the awesomest thread with the best-looking people on it. Except of course for those north carolinian intruders.

My problem with the whole thing is people offering their ignorant "informed" opinions on the matter just to get some face time. You know the type, where their staffer looks up some nifty quotes from some document or goes searching for inane background trivia, and the columnist or interviewee adding a dash of hype to make it seem like they care and are deeply involved in this issue.

Another interesting thing is that what qualifies as "news" is so amazingly random in this country, and basically predicated on what will sell the best. If it doesn't have an angle, it's not worth reporting. Car crashes are boring unless it involves kids or teenagers/drinking. Missing people, like suspects in rape cases, are only important if they're rich and white. Drug use and adultery is only exciting if it's a politician, movie star, or athlete. Diseases are only cool if they're exotic. People getting fired from their job for excessive computer use is only relevant if it's me.

Ah, the South. If only it weren't so nice and warm here...

P.S. I hate when I take so long typing a response that it has become invalidated by stuff posted since then.

And be thankful for the "intruders," they bring class and substance to this thread.

That's not true. If you get fired, who will pay for my dinners?

I would have to disagree. They remove us from our Red Tide Heritage and focus on things we already know so well, like FL is MUCH better than NC!

By the way, I've been to the FSU thread, it basically sucks! A bunch of people bitching about being on hold or on the waitlist at FSU...who gives a ****. Just hope and pray and keep it to yourself! Talk about something more interesting like algal blooms!

😡 😡 Don't diss our thread! I know you're not directing those comments at me in particular but I'm standing up for our folks in the thread. We were supposed to hear something a month ago and WE give a **** or we wouldn't be talking about it. Hence the name of the thread, so if you're not interested in it then don't read it. Unlike algal blooms in an FL INTERVIEW thread? 🙄

I wasn't trying to diss anyone. I know everyone is stressed out and all about being on hold/waitlist, but nothing is getting accomplished by talking about it except building up your anxiety and frustration. I wish them all the best of luck, but they need to try to think about other things...there is just more to life than worrying all the time!

Burns...NICELY DONE!! I've never had success doing that, but then again, I always fill 'er up.

On a side note, my boss is a complete d*** and 4 out of 12 postdocs are leaving because of him, he is not even the PI, but he's been working with the PI for 30 years and isn't going anywhere....anyways, he yells at everyone and today was my turn. I got so p*ssed, I walked out and almost quit. I have 3 more months there, but I'm afraid if I quit, I will have to defer for a year because with the wedding expenses, I wouldn't have money to move to Miami on!!!....Any calming words of advice?....I want to just tell him about himself!! 😡 😡 😡

I'm baking a cake right now in the shape of a sunflower to calm me down...though I will be the only one eating it!!

It was a temporary fix. I buy my groceries at Kroger and when you spend a cerain amount of money in a month, you get 10 cents off per gallon. I went to get gas this morning and realized I had left my debit card at PF Chang's last night, so I was practically empty when I eventually made me way to the restaurant tonight. I stopped just to get a little gas at a nearby gas station to hold my car over so I could get gas at Kroger sometime and save money.

McMD, as far as your issue goes, let's just say I completely empathize with you. I had a very similar situation at a lab job last summer, although it was a much smaller lab than you describe. He was never particularly friendly and I tried hard to do well and get along, but if I ever made a mistake he would get so angry and yell at me; he'd say things like "you know, I was under the impression you were competent at this" and, when I tried to salvage a pair of forceps whose tip had gotten bent he yelled "this is not a salvation army lab!" I was planning on working there for the year but I wasn't enjoying my job and the environment was stressful so it just wasn't worth me staying anymore. I'm not the only one who had had a problem with him either.

The way I see it, you have a couple options. 1) You can try to stick it out; realize that your time there is limited and just tell yourself you have little time to go and just do your best; or 2) you can start looking for another job...maybe a temp waitress job or something, or a summer research assistant position. If you decide to do 2), make absolute sure you have a job secured before you quit. And if you decide to do 1), best of luck...I know it can be tough, but it's just 3 months. Then you'll be off to do better things.

What kind of cake is it? If it's chocolate, I will definitely help you eat it. 😀

I'm sorry your job situation sucks so much. My best suggestion is to make it into a game. Don't let him ruffle you, no matter how hard he tries. When he's being a jerk, tell yourself that he's TRYING to make you mad so that you'll quit, but you're going to show him....you aren't going to quit just because of a loser like HIM. From now on, whenever he's nasty, smile in his face and be syrupy sweet. Go out of your way to be super nice to him. He'll either be suspicious because he hate your guts and so he'll leave you alone, or else he'll start being nicer back. Either way, you keep your job and your sense of humor. 🙂

Don't quit! Having a crappy job is a terrible situations but your days are numbered. I'm working until almost the end of July and I only have something like 61 work days left (I think). You should do a countdown!

Hey Mc--if you decide to quit your job, let me know b/c I think I might get fired today.

I am flipping out right now, and just thought I'd share it with you. To give you a little background, my job is basically to run various reports analyzing the sales data for a major corporation. Anyway, long story short, I've been having an "issue" with this one lady (we'll call her Ms. X) and a report she requested. Its gotten to the point where I've been b*tching about it to my best friend via e-mail. So I recently wrote a series of e-mails, filled to the brim with expletives and the like--basically complaining about how Ms. X is an idiot (I was having a bad day, ok?). Well I'm sure some of you have already guessed what happened...I accidentally sent it to M s. X instead of my best friend! And it wasn't just one e-mail. It was a series of like 5 emails I had written throughout the day--oops!!!

On a funny note, a line from last e-mail was, "I'm taking bets--how much do you wanna bet that she graduated from a public high school in FL?"

Aaah--I can't believe what an idiot I am!

RunnerMD said:

Uh oh. Well, first of all...if you sent her a series of e-mails, were they all in one day or over several days? Because if they were over several days, I don't know why she wouldn't have said anything before. Why do you think you might be fired? I mean, obviously this isn't the best situation, but would your boss really fire you over bitching about someone else who works there? I think it's more likely that he'll sit the both of you down and try to work out your problems instead of simply firing you. Now, if your boss is unreasonable or the lady you sent the e-mails to is one of your bosses, then I have no idea. Either way, think of it this way...everyone makes mistakes. You hate your job. So if they fire you, they fire you. This isn't going to impact your career and, while it might be a bit of a hassle trying to find another summer job, it really wouldn't be that bad. Try to work it out, apologize to her and explain where you were coming from. And if you get fired, so be it! You don't really need that job in particular anyway.

That reminds me of a similar situation my friend was in. A mutual friend of ours was writing her something about her having sex with her boyfriend or something about birth control but accidentally sent it to her uber-conservative mom instead. Not sure exactly how it happened, but needless to say it wasn't pretty.

Runner...I'm having ANOTHER bad day at work, my boss essentially fired me, but I'm still in the lab, I just no longer work for him! (which is great!!)...but in order to not work with me anymore, he had to make up these awful lies and everyone is really pissed...he said I ran horrible gels and mine are the best in the lab, and EVERYONE in the lab agrees with that mine are the best!!!! Anyways, he said the reason he hasn't accomplished anything this year is because of my poor gels, when in actuality it's his poor design of experiments...well, lack of creativeness in designing experiments...and he's only gotten a max of 1 publication per year for the 20-30 years he's been in research....QofQ can vouche that that is ****TY science!! Anyways, I now work for my two closest friends in the labs, both of which are post-docs with no seniority...so we can't figure out how they got me. Anyways, it should get better, but I see some more fights coming on when I'm not doing things HIS way because my new bosses tell me to do it a different way!!...He's going to be PISSED!!!

About your job Runner.....that SUCKS!!!! I can't think of anyway that you could possible weasel your way out of that situation!!!...I hope it's not your boss that you sent those to and I hope things work out!!

Runner, I think you and I need to start school quick!!!! This "real world" stuff is a bunch of B.S.....I never want to leave school again!! haha.

QofQ, I made a sunflower shaped pound cake. It isn't chocolate, but I swear on my life it's the best cake you will EVER taste!!....it's a secret "family" recipe that I'm not allowed to give out, but it's simply amazing!!! For those of you at the campus that I will be attending next year, you will have the pleaure of indulging yourself into it during those long study hours!! 🙂

My exroommate's wedding cake was a chocolate cake and not even white icing. It had chocolate icing too. She didn't want a white cake since she hates cakes anyways.

She's a bigger fan of chocolate things.

Runner,

Sorry to hear about your troubles at work, but on the bright side you wouldn't be with that job any longer anyways since you are off to med school in fall. At any rate, I hope things work themselves out.

Are any of you future UMers thinking of getting a dog? I've been wanting a dachshund for I don't know how long, and I think this summer might be a good idea. The way I figure it- and this is an idea my boyfriend always makes fun of me for but I'm sure that's only because he's jealous that he didn't think of it- it's a small enough dog that I could probably little-train it so it won't mess up the house if I can't get home for several hours. Plus, UM has its lectures online so I could probably stay home a decent amount. I know I want to get one and I think if I don't get one now, I'd have to wait until after residency. It seems like no time is ever the perfect time to get a dog. What do you guys think? Bad idea? Not bad idea?

Psst, frozey, check out the "why aren't there more women in surgery" thread. Apparently, because women aren't in the NFL we'd make awful surgeons.

McMD, it's so easy to forget the feeling of anticipation when you have already been accepted to med school. I used to post in this thread, hell, I used to be subscribed to it, but it makes me impatient when I'm trying to find out something about my situation and ppl are talking about a band that will never be and if it does, it will suck harder than one of those Dyson vacuum cleaners. If you don't like talking about FSU don't visit the 'FSU Response' thread. Just as I do with this thread. The only reason I know of you comment is b/c a someone in the other thread told me about it.

The rest of you guys don't get me wrong. I sincerely congratulate all of you who have already been accepted. I simply don't appreciate when ppl get upset when the only thing we are doing is share info with one another.

Thread du jour. I've been waiting for newdude to light in on you some more so I could get involved. You being a "******" aside, I love a good nonsensically misogynistic "you're bad at this for no reason, and if you are good at it, you're probably ugly and no man will have you" thread.

Good thing you like penises so much. You'll still make a fine urologist. It's certainly the only way you'll get to see naked men. Oh, also you're bad at math.

Love,
Frozey

I beg to differ!

PS-Hope you guys hear from FSU soon--I know its tough! :luck:

*Also, thanks to everyone for everything re:my email mishap. I think I may have averted any potential damage by spinning my story (long story). Even if I do get fired, I really don't care--I'll just move back home with my mom for the next 3 months and live off my savings.

Mc--sorry to hear about your day, but at least you're working with better people now.

The hammer of justice? Somehow I don't picture you with a hammer...a club (the type used by cavemen)? Yes...but a hammer? no way 😉

Well, I dunno about that...Hoover maybe, but not Dyson. Anyway, Zepp, you can always post your questions or ask for opinions about schools on this thread. If I remember correctly, when you first started posting quite a few people joined in on your FSU discussion. The great thing about this thread is that you can talk about med schools if you want but it's certainly not required. It's supposed to be a fun, humorous thread where you can brag about stopping your gas fill-up at $10.00 exactly or pretend you're going to play the didgeridoo in a band called Red Tide and no one (well, I guess now a few people) will hate you for it. This application process is one long stretch of pure stress so it's nice to have something lighthearted on SDN. But just because that's the case doesn't mean we don't want to answer your questions if you have any or give you our opinions if you want them. Just wanted to make sure you knew that. And we all wish you and all the other FL applicants the best of luck.

frozey, you should consider chiming in now because I have no idea with what he could possibly retaliate. I hope it's more elementary school-level insults, though...I enjoy those.

Good times await us at ole JMH:

Supermodel arrested for allegedly hitting flight attendant

Danish supermodel May Andersen has been arrested for hitting a flight attendant on a flight from Amsterdam to Miami, police said.

The 23-year-old bombshell was aboard Martinair Flight 643 on Thursday. She was ''loud and disruptive all throughout the flight,'' according to a Miami-Dade police spokeswoman.

Airport police arrested the woman when the flight landed. She continued her unruly behavior with officers, police said.

Andersen was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital to check for signs of alcohol or drug abuse, then booked into Miami-Dade County Jail.

The leggy model has worked in advertising for J. Crew and Victoria's Secret, and has posed in Sports Illustrated's famed swimsuit edition.

She has been charged with simple battery, resisting arrest without violence and disorderly intoxication.

Zepp...seriously it was not meant with bad intentions, if you read my later post, I elaborated on the issue. When both Runner and I posted on the thread saying we withdrew our spots at FSU, I expected to hear some positive posts like "well, maybe we'll hear something soon because people are starting to give up their spots"....but no, the negativity continued. I know you guys are under a lot of stress and I sincerely empathize with you, however, life is too short to take a pessimistic attitude, think postively and good luck.

And seriously, I can't believe you dissed the band, that was a personal insult.

To all Red Tide members, I'd like to have rehearsals more often so I can have an excuse to quit my job!!...not that I don't have enough already, I just don't have anything to go to...and I really don't want to do something non-scientific.

Mr. Burns...I have a pooch currently...she is a big dog though....a boxer, 8 months old, 60 lbs...you should see me try to lift her when she's in trouble...it's quite the sight!...Anyways, I would suggest you get the pup NOW....potty training is a bitch!!! I would also suggest (and this is only my opinion)....crate training. During my shower, Ellie (that's the dog) got a hold of my versace sunglasses, my fiance's oakleys, my new camera, broke my Ralph Lauren sunglasses, ate cat poop and later threw it up (yummy), got a hold of (and lost...but later to be found) my engagement ring, my promise ring, and my tiffany's necklace, ate 3 pairs of my shoes,....I can't think of anything else on the top of my head, but I added the brands of items to give you a price estimate of the damage she has already done and she's only allowed out without supervision during my showers (but now she has to go to her kennel for those for obvious reasons)...anyways, if I let her run loose the entire day while I was at work, we wouldn't have anything left in our entire house!!! Puppy's and dogs in general are a lot of work, but the potty training is the worst!!...but it's all completely worth it when they quack their toy duck against your head or cuddle with you all night long...awww, I love my pup!

This thread is so entertaining.

Tomorrow is the MCAT, man, that sucks for them!

I'm kinda looking forward to medical school, in a weird, perverted way.

I like abuse.

yrodi, you're not the only one.

I think the worst part about the MCAT was that it seemed like a beast and for me, the day just seemed like a dark cloud when I thought about it, but then going through the actual MCAT day, I was like..."this is it??"....I was one of those weirdos that had packed like 30 drinks (just in case the MCAT room turned into a desert while we were taking the test), a million snacks (just in case I died of hunger while taking the test), a lunch that was ridiculous...then, when I got there, I didn't eat any of my snacks or drink any of my drinks, it wasn't like it was the end of the world anymore. Anyways, I swear I'm not a freak....don't get the wrong impression, I was just extremely nervous, but then for no reason.

You're not alone! I'm a masochist (not in the sexual way) too! I love when I have to study for a "big test," and am stressed out. But then I get in the "zone," and then there is nothing better than how you feel when you finish the test.

Which reminds me, someone yesterday was commenting on how much presidents age while in office due to the enormous stress. I realize that being president of the US is vastly different than being a med student/resident, but do you guys think we will age alot over the next 4-9 years? (Please refrain from making any comments about a certain president, the stress of the job of POTUS, etc.)

I wouldnt worry about it. You get better looking as you get older. It's all part of the combination of confidence and delusional thinking that come with old age. Just don't sleep on your face, and wear sunscreen.

Working 24/7 will just make you look like you have all the more character. And I mean, 24 days a month, 7 months a year. Oh! I couldn't resist!!

It depends. Some students gain a lot of weight, others still find things to do the things they love even if it is not a regular set schedule. My friend's cousin started her residency a year ago or so and she's still looking gorgeous. I think, like with any other job, it depends on how you take care of your own health.

I feel old already...I'm 22 going on 40, it sucks. When I hang out with people a year younger than me now, I feel like I'm out of place. I even asked my friend if I looked older than everyone else when we were at a club.

I had a bridal shower yesterday, it's ridiculous how much people give you. I will be cooking for all of UM with all the stuff I got. We are going to be living in a tiny apartment in Miami surrounded by kitchen appliances. That's depressing. I want a house to put all my stuff in!!!!

I served a few months ago. I was the forewoman. I brought the hammer of justice down so hard, it wasn't even funny. The courtroom actually caught on fire.

I never served jury duty, but I was a judge for Alachua County's Teen Court. I was like Judge Judy. I would keep a mean grimace and rip into the brats whenever they crossed the lined. The head of the program thought that I was so funny that he kept inviting me back---all that and I have no legal experience!

Hello fellow floridians...

I have some medical school stuff to talk about, and I hope you all can help me out ...

I was amazed to open a piece of mail from UM on friday, and it contained a scholarship offer that would pretty much make the tuition between UF, USF and UM equal. I was very surprised. Does anyone know if because I got one now is that it? Or could they still send me more? Also, if I am more interested in another school, is there any way to use that as a bargaining chip? I am not really sure... I was talking to someone about to start a PhD program and they said just to send a letter to the school with a copy of the offer letter? Any ideas?
