So.....

a while back I posted this really fluffy post about how excited i was to start pre-reqs. I wrote that I was working nights full time and would be going to school full time. I said I was confident that I could do that....

well, here we are halfway through the semester and I am struggling in physics. I am doing alright in bio and chem (not as well as i'd like), but no matter what I do, I just can't get through the physics yet. So, I am left with two options:

1. Continue the course - not possible to get an A now. If I work hard at it I can get a high to low B. I've been getting Fs in all my exams (As in the labs and quizzes, all conceptual - no math. The exams are all math). If I continue on this path, I will most likely take PHY 202 and 203 the rest of the year. Here's the question: will I have mastered the material well enough to do well in the other two? How much will my other two classes suffer? Admittedly, my other two classes have been suffering because I've been so focused on physics. At this rate I will most likely do avg. I HATE THAT THOUGHT. That said, if i continue on this path i will hopefully begin medical school by 34. But, at what cost? Mediocre grades and less chances of getting into a school i chose or was high on my list?

2. Withdrawal from the course and take it next fall - If I pull out now, I can salvage what's left of the term and still get A's in the other two classes that are left. I can do two classes per term, which would set me back a year. This means I would not be in medical school until I was 35. I used to think this was not a big deal, but the closer I get there, the more the age thing is getting to me. Here's the upside: If I drop the physics course now and wait until next fall to take it, I boost my chances of doing well but not feeling like I'm being pulled in a million directions.

Working full time and going to school full time is TOUGH.

what do i do? I honestly don't know what to do. Need some sound advice. thanks.

I was in a similar situation, working full time + extra, studying, planning the rest of my life. The folks here didn’t support me, they essentially said “there is no way.”

Medical school has gotten even more competitive since then.

It comes down to you. What do you really want? Do you really want to be a physician? Do you want a better paycheck? Do you want to work in the medical field with more autonomy? Many, many questions.

Your grades, classes, whatever. Sorry. I get it, but we all bust our asses especially for non-trads not on a ride or on old money.

You. You need to decide whether this is worth it to you. Suck at physics? Did you talk to your prof, get a tutor, organize a study group? Maybe you did! Physics was always my weak point, but that what i did because i knew what I wanted.

I’m not trying to be an dingus. The MD and profession is overrated on this site, likely because of obvious bias. There are so many other ways, perhaps more effective ways to help other people.

If traditional medicine is really want you want, then do it. Decrease your work hours and study more physics. Study the MCAT and kill it. But if you want to help people and your gifts lay outside of memorizing science BS, THEN PURSUE THOSE! Go with your gut, go with your gifts.

Best of outcomes to you.

I am in a similar situation. Full-time work, 10 credits, about to get a B in trig and maybe As in the other two + lab. Don't withdraw for Bs. Just work and get the Bs. and learn for next time.

I think most non-trads myself included feel this rush to get on track and into medical school. Would you rather be 35 and in medical school or 35 and a re-applicant with poor grades because you rushed the process.

good point! I've decided to withdraw and take the course next yr.

Most deadlines to withdraw and receive either W or WF have passed. I was asking if you received either a W, WI, or WF. It should show on your records online, such as the grades section or unofficial transcript.
