Okay guys, I have a interesting/complicated background.

med school-->2yr prelim Surg-->2nd year of free research----Failed Step3 by one point---> Applying to FM this year...
Step 1 above average, Step 2 below average all pass first time.
MSPE is good to great.
IMG status
Letters from Surg Attend... hoping they are good.
No recent clinical background/rotations/observerships/externships in last year.

Reason for pursuing FM stated as a change in perspective of life balance for family/work.

Applied to over 100 FM program, will apply to more now as only getting rejections...

Currently
I am doing research because I like it. I like clinical work but very difficult to find something that pays in Canada.

What would you like to see in my application if I am not successful this year to improve my application next year?

Of course, I am studying hard to improve on my Step 3 score! Which I hope I will clear before January.
My concern is my graduation date which will be 5 years next season.
My concern is my lack of clinical training for 2+years after prelim surg..., would you look favorably in me volunteering in the ED and asking the attending to observe patients/ write practice notes and so on. I don't think I am going to be allowed to independently do anything. I mention ED because that is the only place where Fresh Patients are arriving at all times. FM clinics are open only during days and I don't know if I will have time to go to those.

So please some advice to improve my application... I know right now my application looks like; he is trying to fall back on FM but doesn't look dedicated to the field due to my 2 years of Surg background. How do I convince them otherwise... life has its ups and downs and only after being on the other side did I realize that the grass was not as green as I had thought and I want to do something for which we all enter medicine in the first place.

Do you think pursuing an EMT diploma or PA school or other Allied Health Profession Diploma courses would be adversely looked upon?

I mean, I have to think about fields that gives me clinical exposure as all the programs require; research is not a clinical field and an MD is really no good without a license. I need to figure out a way to sustain my family, continue to improve my application without looking like I am abandoning my pursuit of residency.

Essentially, I am asking how do I improve my application for FM for next year if this year does not pan out for me, however please consider the fact that I need to do something that I can sustain my family at the same time?

Thanks...
