Hi all,

Anyone know anything about the fam med programs around Pittsburgh (Allegheny General Hospital in Monroeville, Heritage Valley at Beaver Falls, Washington Health System, and Latrobe)? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Washington health pays well, and gives probably the best benefits out there (I.e. Free housing). I wondered if that was an attempt to compensate for some perceived deficiency though.

I know one doc (in practice in Oregon) who did his residency at Washington Health, he seemed very competent and professional.

Heard very good things about Washington, but have no personal experience. Met the Latrobe PD and some residents, and they seemed nice and looked like a tight knit group, but have no idea about the day to day. Forbes seemed solid and is a good environment for learning. Not sure if your a DO, but they have OMT clinic on Friday afternoons. Specialists seem to like to teach, and Forbes is taking a good junk of LECOM (and some Drexel and Temple) students for rotations so you'll have some teaching experience there. I have absolutely no idea about Beaver, but they've been around for a while and they're the only program in house.

There's no deficiency at Washington--they work you to the bone

i'm a MD candidate!

do you think that if i end up going to a community based program in the outskirts of pittsburgh, i'll end up being limited to smaller cities/towns as an attending?

No. Its FM, its in demand. You might be limited by salary as an FM doc in some cities, but you won't be limited because of your residency, except in the sense of being limited in your confidence to do certain things based on what you were exposed to in your training. If you're a board certified FM doc, you should have no issue working anywhere, just aim to get the best training you can for your own benefit to be a good physician.

bumping this thread. Anyone have any insight to some of these programs around Pittsburgh?? Looking for the normal stuff, to work hard but not burn out. A good amount of inpatient, see a bunch of diseases, and a good amount of procedures. much appreciative!

Or even better does anyone have any insight to the one in Latrobe? Curious because I have some ties to the area. Can PM me if need be!
