FM residencies in NC/SC/TN?

Hello, new member here. I am a 4th year medical student applying for residency in the NC/SC/TN area. I was wondering if anyone had info/opinions on residencies in these states. I am interested in a full spectrum of family medicine (peds, adult medicine, women's health, experience w/ procedures that I would need in a rural setting). Specifically, I was wondering about the following programs:

MAHEC in Hendersonville NC
Moses Cone in Greensboro NC
St. Francis in Memphis TN
Knoxville TN program
McLeod in Florence SC
Seneca SC rural track program
Greenwood SC program
Spartanburg SC program

Sorry for the extensive list, but there are so many programs to apply to; so, if you have heard anything about the above programs, it would be a GREAT help to me. Right now I feel a little overwhelmed with all the choices. Thanks!!!

I actually applied to more than I interviewed with in this region but after further researching some decided not to go for the interviews at some. I may be of some minimal assistance on those too.

Of those I applied to Seneca, St. Francis, and Spartanburg...my app was incomplete (only missing med school transcript, which should be uploaded today or tomorrow). So far of those, received invites to Seneca only. I've received 8 invites total. I'll post when I have more time where I applied (24 programs) and my invites.

I am looking at many of the same residencies in NC/SC. I've heard great things about the South Carolina residencies (especially Greenwood, Spartanburg, and Florence).

I can't seem to find any comments on the MAHEC Asheville, NC or Moses Cone Greensboro, NC programs. Anybody out there at those programs or considered those programs when you applied?

I hate to give myself competition, but I love the Moses Cone program, know people there, and have spent time there. I think it is, by and far, the top program in NC and one of the top on the country.

The PD is a great guy. The faculty I have met are still excited about FM, excited about teaching. I was actually talking to another fac member from another NC program and she said Moses Cone is the best program in the state😱 . I would go there in a hearbeat😍 !

THE RESIDENTS ARE HAPPY, and not just on interview days. (My very close friend is a senior resident--- and believe me, she would let me know.) It is challenging -as residency should be- but that is well balanced by the supportive environment the program fosters. The residents are very well respected at the institution.

There is an IM program there, but the residents seem to be very congenial and the programs respect each other. There are also a few UNC Peds residents there every month, but the FM program is so strong and well-respected that it gives the same feeling as an unopposed program. (Sorry, I am not a fan of being perpetually off-service and looked down upon because I chose FM, as some of my friends have encountered in their big university programs.)

They seem to have a good number of peds and OB in continuity clinic from what I saw. The Sports Med Fellowship is awesome, as is the OB training.

I usually have something at least a little negative about every program, but I can't think of anything for Moses Cone. Go, check it out. Oh, and I was not paid to write this nor am I currently at Moses Cone!🙂

I have heard from all the folks I know that the training at Aville is awesome. I think the thing most people find is that the residents and attendings there are more liberal than the average FM program. Look at the bios and you will see that they have a lot of wonderful idealistic folks who have worked in social justice, were national officers of AMSA, play the dobro (look it up), and traveled everywhere from Bangladesh to NewZealand and back. It's not for everyone, but they have a strong rep for being tight-knit, and for excellent training. One of my attendings trained there not-so-long ago, and if she is any indication, it is an awesome place. I would def look at it, Moses Cone, possibly ECU, possibly Fayetteville, Anderson,sc, Florence, Greenwood, and Spartanburg.

I am a current 3rd year resident at McLeod in Florence SC. We have a great program and I encourage everyone to come and take a look at us. I do want to comment on the city of Florence. I feel that I am qualified to comment on this becuase not only am I doing my residency here, but I also grew up here. Contrary to the above article, Florence is a safe place to live. Florence itself is only a town of approx 40,000 (the 199,000 in the article must be including all of Florence county). Having grown up in Florence, there has never been a time where I have not felt safe. When I finish residency this spring, I am going to be staying in Florence to practice. I currently have an 8 month old daughter who will be raised in Florence. If I felt Florence was not a safe city, there is no way I would have chosen Florence to raise my little girl.

Our hospital is the major referal center for northeastern South Carolina and it serves a population of approx 1 million people. Our unopposed program offers a very strong education in Family Medicine. I once again encourage everyone to come take a look at our outstanding program

I agree that the McLeod program is fantastic. I interviewed there last year and for a great while it was my number one choice. Ultimately, after much soul searching I decided that my and my family's needs were better served in a different location. Even though you feel safe, it is hard to argue with cold hard numbers published by the Associated Press, our country's most reliable news source.

Florence may indeed be a safe place to live, but it is apparently the most violent place in America if you look at per capita violent crime.

Thank you for the input. Your response is definitely reassuring. Given that I've heard so many other very good things about McLeod, I would love to get the opportunity to visit Florence, SC on the interview trail and see for myself.

I am no stranger to the eastern Carolinas, and I guess that's why I was shocked to here that the area was reported as such by that article.

I am also a 3rd year resident at McLeod in Florence, SC. Living in both Cincinnati and Louisville before moving down here, I was shocked at that article as I feel much safer here than anywhere else I have lived.

I seriously doubt the article's information on Florence though. For example, that article lists Florence's population at approx. 200,000. However, there are only about 35,000 in Florence and 70,000 in the county. I wonder if they don't have the wrong city there... which is disappointing if they do.

As you can see from posts from residents and this program AND residents at other programs, we have one of the best programs in the US. Check us out and you'll see exactly why.

After hurricane Katrina, I transferred into Cabarrus Family Medicine (CFM) Residency Program in Concord, NC. I am currently a second year resident here and I could not be happier with my training! I came from a large university based program in Louisiana to this unopposed, private practice based program just outside of Charlotte. There is certainly a night and day difference between the two approaches. If you prefer to learn by doing, then you need to check out CFM. I have found residents to be highly respected by both consultants, nursing staff, and attendings alike. You are treated more like a junior partner of the practice rather than simply a resident.

Working on an area of concentration is a viable option here and is encouraged. One of my classmates is currently doing an elective in hyperbaric medicine, and I will focus on dermatology and procedures during my third year! Our program director is extremely supportive: if you have an area of interest, he will make it happen.

I have found the pathology to be simply incredible and I cannot believe what walks into the ER here at Northeast Medical Center. Since we are an unopposed program with our own private patients, we manage all of these cases rather than other specialties picking them up. Also, being a private practice means a great balance between adult medicine, peds, and OB within the patient population. If you are interested then check out our website http://www.cfmrp.org/.
