Hello,

To make the story short, my BF is finishing his fellowship this year and is more than likely going to take a job in southern CA. I just wanted to know what the job market is like for FM in CA, the culture, lifestyle, pay, practice set up etc. We're talking about marriage after I finish med school, I'm currently an MS2...and am researching places of interest within the area he's looking. Any advice would be great, thanks!

I'm a med student too but anecdotally (relative and acquaintance) I know FM/PCP's (mostly outpatient) making ~$250k in Southern CA working ~40 hours a week. I have heard Kaiser is similar pay and similar hours. And FM making ~$300K in Southern CA working urgent care. All this is salary, not total compensation, with benefits etc. it probably is more. I have heard some places hire FM as hospitalists - maybe that is another possibility for you. FM is in demand almost everywhere though, I doubt you will have a problem finding a job as a family physician, though LA, OC, SD are very different markets than like the Inland Empire or Bakersfield.
