my friend ask why dont i just go for a PhD since im going to be in school for so many years for the MD degree. i was wondering how would that work? after 4 year of MD dont you go for residency or do you go get it afterward? because i know definitely i will never get into the MD/PhD programs for med school. it got me curious about this question .

To actually answer your question- It typically works like this:

Two years of med school, Take USMLE Step 1
Work on PhD
Return for final two years of med school
Residency
Money

Are you asking about the structure of MD/PhD programs? The one at my school does the 2 preclinical MD years, followed by 3 years of PhD work, then the remaining 2 clinical MD years. You can then choose to do a residency or pursue an academic career. All the MD licensing exams are taken at their usual times.

Edit: people do get their PhD's and then decide to enter medical school or vice versa, so that's another route. Typically takes longer, though.

Yes, residency comes after you get your MD degree. Anywhere from 2 years for internal medicine to 7 years for neurosurgery. You can also subspecialize after this. If you do MD/PhD you will go to the first two class room years of med school, followed by 4-5 years of PhD. After your PhD you will do the last two years of med school which are rotations. Finally you will do your residency. So if you do MD/PhD you are looking at 10 years minimum to complete it and residency. MD/PhD programs usually give you a stipend and you don't have to pay tuition. However they are a lot more competitive and you have to spend 10 years doing it.

It appears you are falling victim to Weber's Law. Only do MD/PhD if you REALLY want to do research. Don't say I'm spending 4 years, what is another 4? Not only will spend 10 years do this but you will have an unwritten contract with the medical school that you will do research.

PhD vs MD works out to be about the same time-wise. PhD is usually about 7 years, then if you want a facutly position it is de facto required that you do a post-doc (if not more than one, these days). So you are looking at 9-10 years...4 MD years + 3-5 (or more) residency/fellowship years works out quite similarly...

english is my first language but i never practice it in either writting or speaking because i study 4-5 different other languages pretty much my whole life but thanks for the answer

Internal medicine residency is 3 years. Medical subspecialty fellowships require additional time afterwards.

You better start cause the MCAT essays are in English and your writing skill is horrible. You sound like an incoherent drunk.

True...achieving tenure is a long, long road...and it doesn't pay as much as being a specialist, usually.

Just do what you want to do...do you like academia? Go for it. You can also go to medical school and enter academia, if you want to have your cake and eat it, too.
