I'm really glad that you posted this. I think this is something the new MCAT is trying to include with more psychology and sociology topics. I cannot speak more highly of my sociology class because issues such as these can be analyzed institutionally. Privilege is hard to recognize in yourself, and part of the job of the physician is to treat all types of patients with compassion. I can't speak on any of the scientific causes of obesity and diabetes, but I can say that we can redirect what this doctor describes as contempt towards the system rather than towards the patient. The patient is the victim, and no matter the scientific cause, we forget how privileged we are at times and how others suffer to no fault of their own. I have wondered these same things working with many diabetics at the wound care center. I hope more research is done in this area. Thanks!
