My doctor prescribed Phenergan with Codeine for me yesterday for my cough. I decided that I didn't want it with codeine because I didn't want any trouble when it came time for me to take a drug test. Are there any foods that we should stay away from for the fear of being questioned later? I have heard that eating a poppy seed bagel before taking a drug test is not a good idea.

I saw that on Dr. Know on discovery health. He disproved the myth about poppy seed bagels. Modern drug tests can distinguish between poppy seeds and opium based drugs. You should be fine to eat anything legal you want.

interesting! when i had my physical & blood work done when i started working at ny presbyterian hospital, they asked me if i had consumed poppy seeds within the past 2 days. i guess they just don't want someone trying to use it as an excuse. in any case, they only said 2 days. so, to be on the safe side, just don't eat a poppy seed bagel 2 days before. 👍

Many cough medicines prescribed nowadays have Codeine in it (a small dose). Kaiser hands it out like candy. I would really doubt that they would give you something that would stay in your system for a long time, and cause you to fail a drug test. I'm not sure if they even test for codeine in drug tests. Drug tests are usually done to screen for hard/illegal drugs, not prescription ones. I'm not sure about this, but I wuld think that your daily prescription drugs clear your system relatively quickly. I wouldn't worry about it, just don't take anything two weeks before your test.

The amount of poppy seeds that you would need to eat is ridiculous.... but there are alot of OTC drugs that can cause false positives... (psuedoephedrine, DXM, ibuprofen,) But as for foods... I don't think there is much there.... I wouldn't worry about it.

I did not know about these OTC drugs. Why would they give "false positives."

I really wouldn't worry about it. You can always explain that you have taken something. Then they would re-take the test. I think they have a questionaire before you take the test.

Does one of your med schools have a drug test you have to take? I've heard that this is done more in the third year (when you start seeing patients).

Yeah Mount Sinai, UMich. Your acceptance is contingent upon passing a drug test among other things.

check out this website if you have any questions on any drug tests and foods and what not. If you search enough you can find info on how long it will take a substance to clear your body (thus not show on a drug test...rule of thumb is usually 30 days)

Stay away from poppy seeds, even if on muffins or bagels. Dont take the chance

Wow I didnt know any schools had drug tests, thats crazy, what if say... you live in Europe and are freqeuntly visiting Amsterdam where some things are legal, can you still be punished when you go back to the states?

Anybody know of any other schools with drug tests to get in?

also, I was unlucky enough to eat a poppy seed muffin THE very morning of a suprise drug test at my work and I was slightly worried so I downed so much water, but then just told the nurses and they said if it showed up it would be in such a small amount that they would know it wasnt opium...

When you are in the U.S., U.S. law rules, what you bring with you, inside you etc is under the lens of the law of the U.S. at that point.

You guys are all nutcases. No one is getting any acceptances rescinded for poppy seeds. Eat up!

You can't be punished criminally, so it's not a "legal" punishment issue. But it certainly can reflect on whether they want to let you into a profession with a license to prescribe drugs (just as foreign drug use could affect whether you could play professional ball, work in the pharmaceutical industry, or at high levels of the government). But very few med schools do drug testing for admissions.

Whatever you do in a foreign country is all good...until you step back in the US, then you are under US jurisdiction and law. Don't go to Europe and smoke big fatties all day...unless you plan on stopping a month in advance.

as for the poppy seeds, some tests pick them up, some dont. It depends on the sensitivity of the test and what they would consider as the bottom threshold of "drug." If you think about it there are a lot of minute drugs that we are in contact all day (think of air exchange, money exchange, etc.), it just depends on what is the lower limit of the test....you could pass one test, but then have a false positive on the next.

This is true that some tests pick them up and some don't. However, most tests performed are the cheapo test that can't distinguish the difference. But, not to worry, you do have to eat an insane amount of poppy seeds for it to show up. Most places will then do a more expensive test to determine if it was poppey seeds or something else... At least that's the policy for most people I know at their jobs.

I've always wandered just how many poppey seed I could eat before getting a positive!! The Seinfeld on this was hilarious!!

The Seinfeld was golden. The morning of a job interview i at two huge Otis Spunkmeyer poppy seed muffins....little did i know that i had to take a drug test by the end of the weekend (3 days). I, freaking out at the time and not knowing the real answer to this questions, decided to drink huge amounts of water.

Long story short, i didn't hear back from them until 6 weeks later....only to tell me my urine was too dilute and i needed to take another test. I told them to f' themselves, by that time summer was pretty much over.

And just for our amusement
