Just an update: Screw it, I'm doing peds. Sick of the indecision and after a month of family med I found the kids sooooo much more rewarding to care for than the self-made trainwreck adult patients.

HAHA, that is funny ****. I have been going back and forth between medicine and peds all year. I love the thought process of medicine and the variety of cases. But I also LOVED working with kids so much and watching them get better and leave the hospital, unlike many of the trainwreck adults. So as of now my decision is to do medpeds. It is the perfect residency for me and will allow me training in both to work internationally. Family is way way to general for me...

I wrestled with picking a specialty. I think you have to narrow it down to surgery vs. non-surgery and then adults vs. kids. Beyond that pick a field that stimulates you--and will continue to do so when you are an attending. For me, that specialty is psychiatry. Without question a field that I know I will never be bored doing.

Ophthalmology vs Urology ( That's right I said UROlogy not NEUROlogy)

Still trying to decide... I've been told can't go wrong with either but I can't help but wonder...
Urology- has the medicine (or kind of medicine) but harder lifestyle
Ophthalmology- has interesting diagnostic and physical exam, not so much medicine involved, but great lifestyle

I know I really like surgery with little bits of medicine (being in the OR makes me smile), but I also plan on a family and my kids knowing me. I'm making my 4th yr schedule now too so any input would be great. Thanks
