When you talk about essay, are you speaking of the personal statement? Is there a special format that most people use when they write their PS?

Yes, personal statement. You have 4500* characters(including spaces) to tell them why you want to go to med school.
* if it's the same this year
sure, get your personal statement together...
do a search for secondary apps. Most of the online secondaries have their links posted, so you can get your essay ?s now and have them finished before the secondary arrives (but they may change from eyar to year)
#1 = LOR!

You need a CV for CCOM. In the sciences and medical fields you usually uses CV's, not resumes.

You won't submit your activities in a resume format. Instead, you fill out each activity separately. An up-to-date resume is useful, though, to keep your activities and accomplishments organized.
CCOM and AZCOM ask for resumes/CV's as part of their secondary application.

Read Gevitz to brush up on osteopathic medicine's history.
Start researching programs of interest in depth (helpful for secondaries).
Shadow a DO.
Get letters of rec together.
