How do part-timers get their benefits e.g. health insurance for self and family, dentistry, etc? Do you just do this on your own? How many shifts do groups typically want to be able to covered by their plans? Thanks! (I was planning on working part-time, but my wife won't be working and wondering how I would cover insurance)

It is variable. I work full time and get no benefits, since I am an independent contractor. At Kaiser, my wife works a 6/10 schedule, and gets full benefits for both of us. It works out very well in our situation. In general, most IC jobs will give no benefits....So, you either need to find a group that gives benefits, or you will get an IC job and get your own medical/dental insurance... Good luck.

what's 6/10 schedule? Anyone else have ideas re: how many shifts is typically considered fulltime for benefits?
Thanks!

That's the point. It varies. You can go buy your benefits or have them paid for you. The reality is, things usually equal out. Your salary or per hr usually drops when you get benefits. When you see these very high salaries, there usually is a "catch" either your buying your benefits or you will EARN it via some factor that sucks. You'll either be killing yourself seeing 4 people an hr, working ridiculous hrs, or working in a stressful, unsupportive environment.

It's not like working as a stockboy... you certainly can work 20 hrs a week and get benefits. It really depends.
