Hi,

What advice would you give students who did not match? what could they do while they are waiting another year to reapply for residency? Will they have lower chances of getting a residency the following year? and what about student loans?.

1. Go to one of the few states that does not require a residency. Get a license and try to work for someone.
2. Shadow a DPM and try to learn some clinical and practice pearls
3. Do a AAPPM fellowship
4. Get a job not related to podiatry and make some money to bank or put towards loans.

While waiting for the next cycle: Study, prepare for interviews, and visit programs that you are interested in and have a reasonable shot at.

Ask for a hardship deferment for your student loans. If you can figure out why you were not successful (didn't apply to enough programs, poor interviews,etc.) and correct it, you should have a decent shot at a program. If you were unsuccessful because of poor performance in school and national boards you may still have a problem. Good Luck!

Very good advice given above. I would agree 100%: definitely try to shadow/visit (and work HARD at) as many programs as you can next cycle.

Agreed! Scary! Just imagine: previous graduates (largely Class of 2009 and Class of 2010, I would estimate CONSERVATIVELY about 60 to 120 of them out there) who did not get matched in CRIP/scramble 2011, and/or still did not pass the A.P.M.L.E. Step 2 exam! And the previous graduates who did not get matched and/or did not pass the Step 2 board exam will continue to grow each year compounding the problem. For starters, how many now in the Class of 2011????? 50? 70? 80?
