Hi,

I am currently finishing my first year of medical school and shooting for a baby for the end of next year. My husband is in his third year of his Ph.d.

To all those people who had a baby during medical school: How did you guys paid for the medical bills? what do you do for insuarance? Monthly check-ups (during pregnancy and post pregnancy?) How much were the delivery expenses?

Thank you

Normally in those situations people leave the ivory towers and get real jobs.

And now for some real advice... 🙄

See if you can take out some more loans. Check to see what kind of insurance you and your husband currently have. That pretty much determines what this whole thing will cost you. If your insurance doesn't cover pregnancies and the associated costr or is simply inadequate, you can a)buy some supplemental insurance or b)cancel your basic useless school health insurance and get some real insurance.

It's a long shot, but your husband may be able beg and plead to be put on the real insurance plan for real employees.

You may have to take out private students loans with higher interest rates or regualr personal loans with even higher rates. Ask your parents if they can help out.

I've never done the baby thing, so there may be other options for you, but they are unknown to me.

Thank you for your response.

Both of our insuarance are student insuarance and will only cover emergencies. I guess we will have to take out more loans.
Thank you once again. Any further insight is much appreciated.

Look into private health insurance. Loans will be spent fast if you end up deliverying prematurely or even need a c-section.

Yeah, that's what I meant to say. Take out loans to cover the cost of extra insurance and misc expenses. Don't even think about trying to cover the cost just with loans. Insurance companies have negotiating powers with hospitals that you can't possibly have. Therefore, the price hospitals charge for out-of-pocket patients is actually higher than those with insurance. Kind of crazy, huh?

A lot of states also have state sponsered insurance coverage for preganent women and children. Since, I already had insurance it wasn't an issue for me, but my son was premature and spent some time in the hopsital. In the state of Maryland, the mother's insurance is required to cover the first 30 days of life for the new child. So, we were covered. After that though, seeing how my husband is a med student and we are on a very limited budget, I discovered that Maryland has a health care program for children under 5. Of course there are income requirements to get the free insurance, but it has worked well for us. Even if you don't meet the free insurance income requirements, they a low cost insurance plan as well. I think most states have something like this.

Definitely look into getting private insurance. My wife had a tough delivery and our daughter had to goto the NICU for a few hours (she's fine now), total cost was about $16,000. They almost did a c-section, can't imagine what the bill would have been. Luckly we had insurance.

The title of this post implies someone is baby selling...."$$ for babies" is a tad misleading.
