So if u're planning to do residency in california, can u take step 3 before july first? if u passed, would it mean that once u complete intern year, u'd get ur license? any caveats?

You can take step3 through CA before residency. If you pass it you can get your license after you complete, I beleive 2 years in training.

you can take step 3 before you start residency.

however, you can not apply for your license until you have completed your intern year. i.e. you can send in your application to the board on july 1, right after finishing internship.

you must, if NOT a foreign medical grad, apply before the beginning of your pgy 3 year (before the beginning of your 25th month of residency). if you ARE a foreign medical grad, that you need to apply for your license before the beginning of your pgy 4 year (before the beginning of your 37th month of residency).

Although its theoretically possible to take step 3 before residency, in reality its usually difficult to do so.

They will require that you have your MD diploma before they will even let you register for the test. So if your graduation is in early June, that only leaves 1 month to get your school to verify your graduation and then sign up for Step 3 before July 1 when your internship starts.
