I had a big debate with my friend the other day about admission factors beyond the numbers. I tried telling him that research and work experience is much more important than extracurricular activities. His side is that being president of some clubs would do the job. We got into a big argument. So my question is, am I right in saying that ECs(non-field related) don't really matter when you apply for grad. school as an electrical engineer.

Coming from someone who has both applied to grad school and been on the admissions committee of my grad department, I can say that non-relevant EC's matter very little in the sciences (I can't speak directly to engineering, but I assume it's the same). Research, GPA/GRE, and good LOR's from respected people in the field are much more important.

Grad school and med school admissions are two completely different animals.

Concur.
When I applied to engineering grad school they didn't ask a thing about EC's, just awards received that were pertinent to the degree field.
The same cannot, of course, be said of medical school - they are looking for a much more well-rounded person. This is only fair, since it is a profession based on your ability to relate to people.

This is very true and sucks for some...😡 who may have a perfect med school app and maybe not soo good grad app...hmm...hoping I get in..🙄

what are your thoughts about summer research training program at the nih? are there better opportunities out there?
how much is research weighted in the application process for engineering/science

Research at NIH is good but pays less than programs ran by colleges..and there is no housing..🙁

You should look more into programs like REU and NSF..they provide a nice stiped, housing and good research
