Reading on here for the past month or so I feel like I'm the only one that is gonna do this once and be done with it. Anyone else say something other than "try again" when they ask "what are you going to do if you don't get in to medical school this year?"

try try again....what else can i do (prefession wise)...i mean i need a job that makes great money....where you can be kinda lazy.....the only other one that exists is already taken by paris hilton.....so yes some of us have to try again...

As a general rule of thumb, most med schools want to see that you'll try again and do what you can to improve your app. unless their name is Harvard or a few other top 10's who say you can only apply 2x and if you dont get in you are out of chances with their schools.

If I don't get in, I'm taking the hint. I can't afford to do anything else to improve my app. I got kids to tend...

I will apply again next year, but be pretty down about it. Ive worked hard to get this far, whats another year in the scheme of things?

Wow - looks like we're in the vast minority. At least on here...

Its funny because it had NEVER even occured to me that someone would reapply until one of my MCAT students was flipping out about her practice scores and so I said - look its just a little test - its not the end of the world - I mean what would you do if you didn't get into medical school, and she said "try again." I had just never even thought about someone doing it twice cuz I've always known I want to do it once and thats it.

I mean 2 years ago I was torn between NP or PA and MD anyway - wouldn't kill me to go back to that. And thats what I said on my interview. I'm not really convinced not saying "I'm going to try again" will hurt me - at least I'll stand out :-/ Oh well guess I'll find out in 6 weeks.

I would like to say that I would try again. But i'm honostly not sure what I would be able to do to improve my application over this year (not that it super great or anything, just that being a non-trad means I can't exactly spend a lot of time volunteering for new committments). I could re-take the MCAT of course and try to raise those numbers. But really I am counting on putting all of the effort I can muster into this first effort at application.

I will definitely try again, but I'm already at a loss about how to significantly improve my application. Sure we can all use more volunteer work and clinical experience, and that's where I would probably make most of the improvements, but I'm nervous that I won't get in because of my numbers (3.55, 35+) and it would take 21 credits of straight As just to get my GPA up to a 3.6. Other than extra volunteer/clinical work and reworking my personal statement, etc, I'm not really sure what I could do to make a big difference in my application. Hopefully, I won't need to worry about that.

I thought I was only going to apply once and that was going to be it. Then, I didn't get in last year, and did some re-evaluating and wondered if I would be able to live with myself knowing I just left it at that. Truth is, I knew I would always regret not trying again, even though before, I said if I didn't get in, I would go into forensics or something. But when it came down to it, I did reapply just because I can't seriously imagine doing anything else, and I didn't want to have to look at myself every day knowing I gave up.

BTW, I can understand why some people say only once. It is a lot of money, and it's tough when all you get are a few eternal pre-interview holds and then a whole lot of rejections. But in the end, you can only do what's right for yourself.

Hahaha you won't need to apply again.😀

Being a Florida applicant rocks the world.

I would apply once again, after that my second career beckons 😛

Are you serious?

I feel ya, Jota & Haemulon. But you won't need to reapply because you're totally getting in this cycle. 😀

I would re-apply once, but I don't think I could apply a third or fourth time.

I am in the unique (okay not too unique) situation of applying for the fourth time. I am too stupid to give up because my stats and background each time have changed considerably. But that said, this will be my last time applying. I don't think I can manage the mental strength to reapply again.

There are many reapplicants at my school. Most did not change their app substantially but did a year of clinical work/volunteering/classes/masters/etc. I don't think med school is looking for huge changes in your app but want to see something being done during your 'gap year'. Personally, I think spending one extra year on a 40 year career is not a huge sacrifice, but I guess this really comes down to how much you want to do medicine.

No it comes down to how much you want to be a doctor. There are a lot of other ways to have a career in medicine than getting an MD.

a 40 year career is not a huge sacrifice, .

40 years?......doctor at 30 years....do you practice until you are seventy?....wont you hands be all shriveled (like raisins) and shaky (like an earthquake).???

Not every field of medicine involves wielding scalpels, you know.

I know a radiologist who is 85 and his eyes are still as sharp as ever. heh.

I'm planning to only apply once. I've been as genuine to myself and the schools in this whole process, and if they don't want me I'm taking the hint. I'd probably go for my PharmD.

i looked at your stats and agree....go for pharmD!!!

i totally regret joining SDN this late. if i don't get in this cycle, i feel like i've got so much more knowledge now and know exactly what to do in the next year in order to get in because i know where my application is lacking...

everywhere.

What's that supposed to mean?😕

Piece of advice...they guy's a troll. Ignore. 😉

Who wouldn't want you? Your stats are great!

That's what I meant. Of course, there are a dozen different ways to work in medicine, but I was referring specifically to becoming a medical doctor. Better? 😉

Yeah, I guess. I actually didn't have a full grasp of what a troll is (pretty new to the whole wide world of forums), but have run into this guy on other threads already, and now definitely understand. Thanks for the compliment.🙂

Nothing! Your stats are incredible, you're going to do great - click on HopefulMDs name and go to his public profile. On the right top it will give you the option of adding him to your ignore list. The more we ignore the trolls the more they go away.

If I don't get in this time around I'll reapply. I'm giving myself this year and next to get in, and if I don't, well, I'll have to do some serious re-evaluation.

The guy doesn't even make any sense. My 7 year old niece writes better than that. 🙄
