Hi,

Just curious about your time commitments during med school. I inquired at my school about the early commission program in the ANG (even though I'm a NAVY type - the ANG has a program in which you come in during med school and so don't have to wait until licensure) and was told that I COULD NOT do this. The reasoning, after an administrator checked up the chain, was that course directors wouldn't give up any time to fulfill drill requirements during the clinical years.

Do HPSP students not have any time requirements during clinics? How does this work? Was the administration here wrong, or is the HPSP somehow different?

I admit that I was a bit PO'd at the response and would like to get the gouge on how the HPSP works.

Thanks,
P

Hey - I did Army HPSP and just graduated (internship starts tomorrow).

The only time committments you have during med school is during the summer. There are no responsibilities whatsoever except to work towards your MD. The summer committments are also very flexible. If you want to do research or something you can fulfill your requirement "at school." I did this twice and only did one month away from med school. The summer requirements are basically the same as clinical rotations in med school - I did a month of pediatric cardiology in DC, for example.

So don't worry about the military (at least the Army) getting in the way of your education - they are remarkably hands-off.

PM me if you have more questions.
Good luck.
