I don't know if you guys considered getting a laser printer yet...but it's definately the MOST important thing I have (of course you need a computer too)...but you have so many things you'll have to print 🙂

so here's a good deal if you're considering it:

OfficeMax has the HP LaserJet 1000 Printer + $24 MSN$ for $120 w/ free shipping.

Click here to activate $30 off $150 coupon.
Search for 20082624 to find the printer for $149.98.
Add something cheap (pencil item #SAN14420) to get over $150.
Use MSN Wallet checkout to get back 20% ($24) in MSN$.
Final price is $120 + tax w/ free shipping.

thanks for the input, but what about ink jet printers? why not those instead of laser printers. i think ink jet is as good as laser and you also get colorful copies.

haha i have both... I got a Laser cause I didn't bring my ink jet from undergrad... but I wouldn't trade the laser for an ink jet just case I highlight and stuff a lot and I hate the smearing... and it prints so much faster...when you have exams you'll want to save those two mins (so you can sleep, of course 😛 ) But I find that a color printer is helpful... i printed out like 200+ pages of color pics for Oral Histo and it would have been nice to have had it at the beginning of the year for some stuff...

I just spent all night organizing my stuff (old exams and notes) for whoever my little sib will be... god... i can't beleive it's possible to accumulate or to have actually *learned* so much 😉

thanks for the good advice.
we really have to print out that many pages, huh?
that is very low budget.
i will see you all in august.
please be safe until then.

stargirl,
i've never had a sister before.
can the sister share what the sister has?

what does it take to join your family?
teefpulla!

oh, just a little backround.
i'll be starting columbia in august.
im finishing up a masters in public health at the moment at UMDNJ-
i went to WEsleyan university, in CT for undergrad.
im apartment hunting tomorow in the upper west side.

hello teefpuller,
i like your icon, my style.
anyway, i'll be there to join you in aug.
do you know what you're gonna write for your welcome message? I still have no clue. maybe a little introduction but that'll be boring.

teegpulla,
you will get assigned a big sib when school starts... and they give you old exam stuff and they will sell you their books... try to buy them from your big sibs (helps establish a better relationship w/ them...)...and basically they give you advice 🙂

oh yeah you don't have to print anything out... but there's a lot of material that you can print out if you want...

i would put up a pic of how much stuff I have from 1st year...but that might scare you guys away so i won't do it 😛

thanks for the info stargirl.

jester, do you know where you're living?
im trying to figure it all out now.

apartment hunting is tough stuff.
later on
teefpulla!

fellow first year columbians,

has anyone received any info on housing? is it getting pretty late to find on campus housing?

sam

nothing from housing here.
it is getting pretty late into the process.
lil worried. i want to get into dorms, cause it's cheap.

maybe you guys should call them... you're suppose to get these sticker thingy and you have to send them back before they assign you housing...
go to yahoo/google and look up columbia health science housing to get the phone number...
if you guys live close to the city and don't qualify for housing i would suggest that you guys drive here and ask about tower housing...or close by apartments

i have received and sent those mailing stickers. should i just wait? when did you get news from them last year?

don't remember 🙁 sorry i did mine really late cause i was so iffy about what school i was going to go too... 🙂 glad i made the right choice tho 🙂

i already filled out the request for the application and the stickers, and now waiting for the housing application itself. I think there's somthing wrong with their prints, they said it should be in the mail soon, but it hasn't. Don't know what to think. 😕

Not sure but I don't think you can apply for the Towers separately. I think we apply for both Towers and/or Bard on the same application. Don't you Stargirl? That's what i thought when i read the instructions. But i could be wrong. =(

Some of the apts i looked at around the hospital is about $800-$1000 . about twice as much as what i would pay for a dorm room. And most of these apts are around Ft. Washington Ave. The dorms are on Haven Ave, which seems a lot more quieter and safer even tho it's a block further from the hospital than Ft. Wash.

Hey PDP,
there's TWO WAYS to apply for Towers...1. is thru those stickers but it's harder to get... especially if you live in nyc
2. is to find someone w/ an open room in the Towers and hope they pick you over everyone else 🙂
Come by bard or Towers and ask the housing people how to do that (I don't know too much about this...since I'm staying in bard).

what's there to do in NY... the non-tourist stuff... 🙂 i need to start taking advantage of NY 🙂 especially since this summer's so relaxed for me 🙂

*sorry i am on the phone while i'm typing this...hope it makes sense

I got my actual housing application a week ago (june 16th) I filled it out and sent it the next day priority mail. I preferenced the georgian residence first because I don't think I will get into any appartment and because I REALLY want a kitchen. I love to cook and I can't imagine tromping up a floor just to boil an egg. I actually really want a roomate(s) too because I'm afraid of getting lonely. Stargirl--do they put many out-of-state first years in Georgian? And if so, how the heck do they determine roommates?

Oh, and I already sent in my picture and a blerp about myself. It went something like this, "Hi, I'm a huge dork and I look forward to meeting you all." But seriously, I hate writing about myself. I'm gonna look back in four years and say, "geez I was a nerd when I was 23." I really hope we have a fun class this year. I'm a little scared I might get caught with some pesimistic nerds like NYC blows.

Good luck to you all, and see you in about 8 or 9 weeks!

hi!
i sent my application today. i applied for bard. i don't really like to cook so having a kitchen wasn't a factor for me. but! i hope bard is "liveable". i've heard too much negative aspects of bard. yea, i hope we don't get stuck with people like NYBlows. anyways, enjoy your summer portlander. see you at orientation. oh shoot... i forgot about the intro. thing... thanks for reminding me!

has anyone received their housing assignment? where's my housing assignment?! i've heard med students have gotten theirs...

🙁 i'm sorry but meds have guarentee housing 🙁
you'll hear from them soon I'm sure 🙂

i've met two of the incoming 1st yrs 🙂 they were really nice 🙂

I went to the housing office last Tuesday, that was the 8th. They told me that they just finished assigning dental students. They also said some assignments already went out and some are going out this week. So look for it in the mail.

5th floor! i got a room with sideview of a building... sux.

having a sink is way more important than the view 😛

Did anyone else get the Towers!? I got Tower 3, and I was wondering if my roomates were gonna be upper classmen, or other first years.

I got into Tower 2 with upper classmen...
see you guys soon!!

when is orientation? anyone know?
aren't we supposed to get our orientation schedule by mail?

call the school, i think you should have gotten it already...(not 100% sure).

Those of you who got into columbia, what were your stats? How hard is it to get into an ivy league dental school? Anything special required? Research, clinical or post bac experience?

Thanks
