What does a typical day at NYUCD entail for first year dental students? Also, I've been hearing a lot of things about the school. Money won't be a problem for me only because of scholarship and I am staying with a relative. How much personal expense money should I be using? If can't answer second question please answer the first. Tank u

I was wondering if you could post your stats? Like GPA and DAT scores. Did you get a full scholorship from NYUCD? If so good job!

3.42 GPA/ 22DAT

50%

22 on the DAT and your going to NYU?! You must really want to go there!

I think NYU is great...besides all the rumors about the school. I haven't heard anything about the school failing to produce competent dentists. I have only heard about the BS that goes on at the school. This tells me that either the students who complain can't handle it and the school is tough or the school sucks. I prefer to think its the first. I'm not saying that the students can't learn or that they are dumb...I'm just saying that the program is tough and some students way of venting is by talking about it. When people vent they aren't going to bring up the good stuff....only the bad stuff and it is sometimes over-exagerated. Anyways, with the scholarship I compared the price to other schools that I got accepted and this came out cheaper than some and about the same price. Anyways....yes I'm going to NYU...got a problem???(j/k)

If you are finding housing off-campus, where should I look? I have been searching midtown, is that most convenient? Amy mentioned since I am married, many live in the "towers," where are they? (Unfortunately, I ignored Amy the entire time...nice, but the kindergarden voice put me to sleep.)

Any help would be appreciated.

tell me about it....her voice is so annoying. It was funny because that day I was going off of about 2 hours of sleep. So I was dead tired that morning. I fell asleep during the financial aid presentation. But Amy Knowles...all I have to say is WOW!!! She is very nice but ridiculously annoying with that little voice. It's like she is reciting every word from a skit or something.

As far as housing is concerned try looking out into brooklyn or something. You might have to wake up a bit earlier but its not too bad...just take the train or two and walk from 14th to the school or 23-22 to the school. I'm staying out in flatbush with my uncle. He gave me the basement for free.

I'm a 3rd year so not sure if the first year schedule has changed, but first year schedule is pretty relaxed. Tuesday and Thursdays are lab days. If I remember correctly, you have class everyday at 8am-1pm. Are those classes skippable? Yes. We had transcript services so unless you are a gunner, most of these morning classes are empty.

Tuesdays/Thursdays: With a class of 200+, they split the class into 2 sections. So while Section A is in lab, you have that time off. and vice versa.

So bottom line, 1st year: lots of time free time b/w classes. Lots of naptime. 2nd semester is the hardest semester of all 3 years so far. Relax in the fall semester...

Piguy, thanks! Got anymore tips for us new students? What about living situations? What do you think about the dorms?

I lived in 26th street my first year. I'll start out with the pros

Positives:
1)You get to meet/become friends with other 1st year dental students. The friends in my hall are actually the friends I hang out with to this day..
2)It's right around the corner from the school. You can literally roll out of bed and head to class, grab a quick lunch b/w classes, etc
3)If you're from out of state, saves you the hassle of finding an apt before 1st year

Negatives:
1)Being a dorm, you have to sign in AND out all your guests. Not that I did it, but imagine bringing somebody home and having to sign that chick out in the morning 😉
2)The place is not in the best condition...It's livable, but nothing to be proud of...I had actually had a mushroom growing in my bathroom
3)$1580/month...For that money, you could get a VERY nice place in Manhattan. I live 9 blocks north of the school in a great, trendy, young professional neighborhood for $300 less than the dorms...and it's bigger.

But in general, I wouldn't trade my experiences b/c of these negatives. You make some great friends and it's only 1 year. Whatever you do, don't move to Waterside apts 😉 I'm just biased. Move there if you wanna be depressed and isolated from NY...

Hi Pi-guy,

Did you use a broker to get your cool apartment? Also, did you have a guarantor?

I'm looking for apartments next week (for a July 1 move in date). Don't have a gurantor that qualifies (i.e. makes 200k a year), but I have access to enough cash to pay the year up front if necessary (though of course I'd prefer not to).

Do you think I'll be o.k.? Any other advice would be cool.

Thanks.

That is a mature attitude. I agree. When people are stressed, they tend to blame everything around them. I've never heard about NYU producing incompetents either.

You can expect to be crowded into one lecture hall for every lecture you will have. Every class is lectured on in one auditorium. Depending on how far you live from the school your commute will be long. When you start GA you will be there from sun up to sun down. Often in the same room or at Hunter college across the street where the Lab of your anatomy course will be. The suggested living allotment is like 30k. If your frugal that willl last just until the end of the academic year but not much longer. I suggest knocking over a bank or two to really get the NYUCD Big City experience.

I prefer larger class sizes than smaller ones. I don't know, it's more comfortable to me, and besides, the larger the class the better the curve. But i come from an undegrad university where our biology class was a class of 600... no kidding 600. I still did well as did most people, because you have to realize, if you typically fall in the upper middle, you're not gonna fail.

As crazy as it may sound, for a July 1st move in date, you are looking a little bit too early. A lot of places will hear this and tell you to come back 2 weeks prior to move in...that's how high demand is here...it's crazy. Doesn't mean you can't start looking though...but be prepared not to find anything

I actually do have a guarantor. I think if you can't find one, see if you have a rich family member that could vouch for you. Most buildings would allow this. I did use a broker, but you can easily do it w/o one...in fact, if you can, go w/o a broker. There are certain rules tho...I think if a certain broker shows you an apartment, you are not allowed to get another broker for that particular apt.

Where are you looking to live? What's important to you? Close proximity to school or just a cool place to live? I've done a lot of apt searching so let me know if you have any q's...good luck b/c ny apt searching sucks

Doesn't school start at the end of August?

Yes, August 22 to be precise. (but I need to get to NYC early because my wife is starting a research job in mid July.)

Pi-Guy,
Thanks for your response. This is good to know.
I don't care about being super close to school, but I don't want a super long commute either. I kind of like the Upper East Side.

I just found out today that a good friend of mine is related to a broker in Manhattan, who I will most likely go with. I figure this is better than just picking a random broker.

Here's a question for you. Do rents typically significantly increase each year (assuming the apartment is not rent stabilized)? How common is it for people to stay in the same apartment for a long period of time? Or is it normal for people to switch apartments each year?

Thanks again for your help.

Well, if you're living in a good area w/ high demand, chances are you will see a rent increase every year...i know my building does. thankfully, i'm really good friends w/ the secretary downstairs so we got a break...that's why we're stayin here.

but, try to get a rent stabilized apt if you can. if you're not overly concerned about being close to school, try my area...murray hill. you'll love it. great bars around here, good eats, and for some reason, there are a lot of beautiful people around here. upper east side is good too...commute shouldn't be that bad...straight bus shot or just hop on the 6. my roomie and i considered that area too. 50's are good too.

if you're looking for high rises, try windsor court, laurence towers, or rivergate. all within walking distance of school...

1. Some row instructors here nice and competent. I've seen about 4 of them.
2. New cafeteria in the basement.
3. The 5th floor clinic will become state of the art.
4. Wifi Internet access within certain areas.

But only #1 is something of real importance.

Now that is about all the positives I can think of about school itself. And if you really think about it, those positives do not mean much in the bigger picture. If I am an applicant, I would much rather goto a school with a HIGHER graduation rate with ****ty facilities rather than one with a lower graduation rate and all these luxaries. So, lets please get back to the MUCH longer list of negatives, because that is really what NYU Dental is really about. 👍

Hey Pi got a question for ya..
i can spend about 1700$ a month maximum for an apartment..i was checking out some places online in murray hill where you are and also upper east, midtown, etc...anyways..i want a cool place to live, as long as it's not really far from school. Also one requirment i have is that it has to be a one bedroom NOT a studio...the bedroom has to be seperate cuz i would go crazy living in one room all the time, it's a psychological thing🙂 do you think i could bag a good place for 1700$? if you have any websites/building names, i could check out online that would be great...
I was just in NYC a week ago and i saw this incredible building with phat ass apartments..i think the place was called The Tate...now those were some quailty apartments!...but one beds started at 2500 🙁 ...
Thanks in advance bro.

If you can spring for $2000/mo, Stuyvesant Town is great -- it's a gigantic complex within walking distance of the dental school, very nice apartments, huge (for NYC standards) bedrooms: http://www.pcvst.com/rentals.asp (plus, no broker fee)

hmmm...1700 for a non-studio...that'll be tough. you'd have no problem getting a studio for that much in murray hill or UES. why dont you get a roomate? for $1700 a piece, you can get a pretty nice apt. check out eberhart (sp?)...it's a company that owns a lot of nice apts in the ues. forget what the website is, but do a search on it...good luck

You are probably right about the venting part. But the rumors that are going around is true.
Examples:
1) two weeks ago, one of the professors lost a bunch of scantrons after the exam. He told us that if we marked the correct answers on the original test paper, and have a passing score, he'll give us a top score of 70. If you are one of those overachievers who wants to specialize, I think they just screwed you over because you're going to have a big fat "C" on your permanent record due to their mistake.
2) If you know anything about the part I boards you know it's given in July 11. We have our last final less than a week before that. If you are smart enough to cover the same amount of material that others cover in months in a few days. Congratulations! You are in the right school. If you are not, you just screwed your self over.

It's obvious that you are not yet a dental student since you are trying so intrusively to convince people not to attend this school. Truth is, your not convincing, you're just dumb. You probably would have to worry about gettin kicked out, if you haven't been already, since you obviously have nothing better to do but vent about something you have no clue of. Thanks for the PM telling me not to go to NYU. I'm not worried about stress or not passing. I've always passed and I like large class sizes. I like living in the city, where everything is always open. And I bet you do too. Sorry you didn't get accepted into any dental school . :meanie: Try next year, and let the people who got into dental school enjoy their time off.

Check out this losers PM to me:

Now I can see why you are coming to dental school. We were all like you once, with our over inflated undergrad GPA and so proud of becoming a dental student in one of the biggest cities in the world. Soon you'll experience the inner stories of NYU. I can see you were dumb enough to be deceived by this school's presentation. May be I'll see you at the orientation, Charles. I'm planning to work as an orientation counselor. By the way, don't be so proud of your scholarship. I have seen plenty of people who lost their scholarships after the first year. I'm sure you won't be one of them. Good luck maintaining that 3.2 GPA.

Orientation Counselor? Who are you kidding? not me that's for sure.

Tell those naysayers to stick their negativity up their root canal (without anesthesia). Anyone who got into any dental school ought to be happy - consider how many people actually become dentist. Each year only about 5,000 students gets accepted.

I'm not going to NYU myself, but a year ago, I would be happy going to any dental school, I'd be willing to go to Timbuk 2 SOD if that was my choice.

Charles, if that is your name, yeah that guy that PMed is not winner. Loser, I dunno. Winner? He's not.
