Sorry to bump an old post, but for those of you who do other things during lecture, are you ever worried that something a prof says in lecture but not on slides may be tested on an exam?

I had one professor who was notorious for doing this. He would test mostly on what has been stated and not on his slides (his sessions specifically were not recorded either, so you have to listen). You will know who these people are as time goes on and you will adapt. My school only has a few mandatory sessions. His was not mandatory per say, but since it wasn't recorded and he tests on what he says you might as well consider his class mandatory.

Thanks. And if they record all the lectures but class is mandatory, would you guys just recommend studying during classes (not listening to prof) and then watching the lectures on higher speed when you get home?

It really depends on what you feel is more efficient and you need to experiment. If you feel that you get far more just studying in class and watching recordings, then do just that. Or if you feel you gain more from listening to the lecture directly (maybe you like to ask questions after class etc.) then go the traditional route.

If a professor had a useless mandatory lecture (even if it is not recorded), I would just sit in the back and study my own stuff. Get a lay of the land first (i.e. understand how each professor tests) then find your niche of studying.

Keep in mind not everybody has a choice, you have to go where you get in. Also multiple schools lie straight to an applicants face about attendance / or change policy and once you are in the classroom in too late.
Admins make policy by either following trends ( DO majority is mandatory attendance) or following popular " research" which currently says regular attendance in lectures increases grades and those that do well grades wise pass boards. While admins, deans and teachers quote this "research" they never produce it for anyone to look over and often punish those that ask for it stating it is unprofessional and disrespectful ask for it.

This "research" happened to us too. Such BS, because no "data" is ever shared.

For those that only get into mandatory attendance schools don't worry though. I had mandato attendance the first two years and even though it sucked going through it. I was constantly upset due to "never having time". It's not the end of the world and once it ends you realize it's not as bad as it could have been. You will get through boards and be fine. It's just a major irritation.

Hand on the ear is a personal fav. however, if a school makes a point to restrict earbud use, they probably wouldn't fancy hoods or big hats. as for wigs, still doesn't help the male population. Looping behind the ear still doesn't prevent the bud from being in your ear lol which is what they can see.

If you have long hair the loop behind the ear might just work
