I am starting this thread for supervising pharmacists/pics to share tips and experiences with each other. We all know this is a stressful job where we get little credit for what we do.

I was wondering how do you guys manage tech hours? We know that the tech hours we are given with are impossible to run a pharmacy with. This is especially true in winter and with all the programs we got to worry about (For cvs, there is going to be another program coming out soon!!!). The question is how many hours do you go over by? With the economy tanking and field management taking pressure, do they give you crap for going over?

As a former PIC, i remember not giving a rats -ss about the hours...field management would send me emails, but i would just ignore them...eventually after a few months of that, they would send more emails and we would scale back a little bit...Ours numbers were amazing when my partner and i were there, usually beating budget by 200-300 rx's weekly...i dont know how they are running things nowadays though...

  • How many Rxs are you filling per week?
  • What are your base budgeted Rxs and and base tech hours?
  • Do you flex up and down? (Do you know what flex is?)
  • How well trained is your staff?
  • Do you have pharmacy interns, if so are you using RVC hours?
  • Did your supe give you whats called a skeleton schedule?

We get 100 tech hours per week, filling around 1600 rxs a week and doing delivery. When we get busy we pull cashiers from the front end (this amounts to about 8 hours per week from them not included in tech hours). The store manager is amenable to the situation. The pharmacy is where the profit is, there's no reason for an experienced tech who could be doing data entry to be ringing up Robutussin. If we go over hours there have been no repercussions so far.

My store does 1100-1200 scripts/week and I'm allowed to use 125 tech hours. Pharmacy opens 9a-9p with no pharmacist overlap. All my staffs know their stuffs and we have been an excellent store for over a year consistently. SSS, Execution, KPM are all good except we're far from making this year's (new) flu shot goal of 400 shots (we got 108 so far)!
