Hey folks,

I'm a DO student applying to ACGME anesthesia programs this year, looking for a little advice from the DOs on here.

For the programs with the clinical base years built into the anesthesia residency, were you able to complete all of your required rotations during PGY-1 in order to get AOA "approval"? Can you extend this into your second year in order to complete the requirements?

I haven't seen many CBY's with time for family medicine or OB/GYN rotations.

Did any of you opt for transitional/prelim years and advanced anes instead? If so, were these easier to get approved?

I really want to match into a 4-year categorical and be done with it, but I want to make sure I can swing the AOA requirements.

Thanks in advance. 👍

I didn't try to have my CBY at Vandy approved b/c I didn't care. My buddy did and got his approved though, wasn't too tough for him.

Sure.

I went to an ACGME approved internship/residency in an internal med base year. The two headaches I had were I had to outpatient clinic once per week with the residents (the prelim interns didn't have to) and one of my electives had to be used in the ED.

After I did all that and finished my intern year, then I attended an AOA conference in San Diego. This effectively completed all of the requirements. I submitted proof of all this and they approved my ACGME internship year as an AOA year.

Pretty painless actually, except for the weekly outpateint clinic (but it ended up helping me when the AF made me a GMO).
