I just was accepted to Drexel and thought it was a nice looking school. I would choose Drexel over Temple even though it may not be as strong of a school as Temple.

Anyways, so how is the social life there. I mean, it looked like it was in the middle of nowhere. Do people go out and have fun on weekends and where do they go.

Also, how much is housing typically and is it close by school? Is it easy to find a roommate and how does the roommate matching work? I am mostly concerned with the social life and if people have fun on weekends.

I'm from CA so moving over there would be a big jump for me. I just don't want to feel isolated and alone if you know what I mean.

I'm from Philadelphia, Pa where Drexel is located. You say you've been here to Philadelphia, Pa and the school looks like it's in the middle of nowhere? Are you sure you visted Drexel University?

Drexel University is right next door to University of Penn which sits almost in the heart of Center City Philadelphia 34th and Market. That is hardly in no man land. Drexel and U of Penn are like touching each other. You walk across the street and your at Drexel University.

As far as housing. You looking at what we call college town. The rent is not cheap on Drexel nor U of Penn campus. And, if you walk to the east, your in Center City which rent goes anywhere from $900-1000 a month or more. Walk to the West, your in West Philadelphia. The further West you go, the cheaper the rent. That's because your walking away from Center City.

Go South and it's the same thing. Same for North also. However, I would advise anyone not comfortable with Philadelphia to stay away from North and South Philadelphia unless your talking around the Center City area.

Night life.....your in walking distance to Center City where all the nite clubs, resturants and other entertainment are. Unless your a Del Ave person which is like miami night life. The block is long, Dangerous due to traffic, and lined with Night Club after Night Club. Philly is no New York when it comes to clubs but we are far from out in the Boon Docks where the only Night life is the small bar on the corner of Bucks street right under Sally's hair salon.

As far as which is better Drexel or Temple, hmmmm I have no comment since I did not apply to any of these schools. I've choosen to go out of the country for my med school education manily because I'm a city girl and want a new experience when it comes to culture.

You are obviously not from Philly enough to realize that Drexel University School of Medicine is *NOT* at their undergrad campus.

uhh, jasminegab....while drexel U's main campus is right down the road from upenn, the medical school is actually located in East Falls, a quieter residential neighborhood off kelly drive. Slickness, you can rent a decent two bed place in the area for less than 1000 a month easily. If you want a more happening place to live, you could live in Manayunk which is a few minutes away from drexel med, with lots of bars, clubs, eateries and such off of Main Street. Also, Drexel has a shuttle that runs from the Queen Lane Campus to the downtown hopsital, so living in Center City is feasible too. Even then, paying 900-1000 a month for a one bed is a high end estimate, and you can find much cheaper deals downtown if you look around. to get an idea on prices, check the classifieds in www.philadelphiaweekly.com

There's definitely a group of people at DUCOM that give their liver a workout on a regular basis if that's your thing (not that there's anything wrong with that) but one of the benefits of going to a school with as many people as Drexel is that there are LOTS of clubs and activities. I tend to do things more outside of school, and I focus more on sports/outdoor activities rather than drinking. Personally, I am on the rollerhockey team (DUCOM pays for more than 1/2 of the fees), the rock climbing club (DUCOM paid for ropes/harnesses), I mountain bike 3 times per week, I skate with the landskaters (www.landskaters.org), I'm a reserve officer in the Army so I have military training 1 weekend/month, and I listen to breaks and drum and bass in Center City... (www.phillyjunglemassive.com and www.reflective.net)

There's lots of stuff going on. I was surprised once I got here. As far as housing goes, I live across the street from campus and I split a 2Br/1ba for 825/month. The admissions office has a list of people looking for roommates. I found one in February or so, but then he got accepted to UC Irvine, so he bailed on me. I then scrambled to find another one, and happened to see that one on the list was from San Diego as well... we met up at a bar one night and that's how I found my roommate.

ttac,

Im on the Temple rollerhockey squad. We are currently looking for a new league to play in. From what I hear, your team used to be in the same league as us but left?

Where are you guys playing now?

PS: We're playing at a rink near St. Chris's's's's... The Philly Fun Factory (700 E Erie Ave). We're actually off for this shortened season until post X-mas. I actually didn't play last year so I don't know where we played.

It's been a pretty rough season since all of our star players are now third years on rotations. From what I hear, last year we started off in the competitive league (silver I guess) and then half way through the season switched to bronze, where we did pretty well postseason.

There's definetely tons of socializing that happens at Drexel. That's one of the main advantages of going to a larger med school. More people to meet, make friends with, and party with. You'll definetely have a great time here. In fact, aside from the great pre-clinical and clinical training, most of the people here are pretty cool. We all help each other other, share notes, help each other, etc. In fact, I made a post a couple weeks ago entitled "all about Drexel" that you can read. Housing is probably the cheapest of any major city in the US. You can rent your own place within 0-4 blocks of school for 500-800 or you can share an apt w/ your own room for even less. But don't worry about the social scene. You'll make tons of friends and have plenty to do since philly is a big city.

Opps sorry. My mistake.

Yes I'm from Philadelphia. I have been here for 20 years. And No, I did not know that the medical campus was not on the main campus. As I stated in my post, I did not apply to any of these schools. Although, Drexel was a school that I was considering during my early undergrad years.

Ok...so I made a mistake...sheezh....🙄 hit me over the head already. However, I have been in philly for like 20yrs. I came here when I was 12yrs old and I'm 32yrs old now. So according to your quote....I guess I'm not from philly enough.

I heard that there was some decent housing a couple of miles away in a funky new (maybe being gentrified?) neighborhood. Anyone know about that? I can't remember what the area was called but it sounded cool -

Do you mean Northern Liberties? It's supposed to be the up-and-coming neighborhood in Philadelphia...that is, the rent's doubled there from what it was 2 years ago, but it's still reasonable and not all *that* far from Drexel's medical school. It's just outside of Center City, and not very far at all from Drexel's main hospital, Hahnemann.

For you Drexel students, what other schools were you applying to?

For anyone who interviewed at Drexel, can you please tell me how long it took to hear back from the Admissions office after your interview. I interviewed there earlier this month and loved it there.😀

One month for me - interviewed x/25/03 and found out I was accepted on (x+1)/28/03. My friend, however, interviewed there x/17/03 and found out she was accepted on (x+2)/9/03. I'd say about 4-6 weeks.

GOOD LUCK!!!!! I hope you get in.

make sure you know about, talk to the students about, and like the curriculum if you're going there... definitely not for me, and no amount of things to do is gonna make up for that. good luck!
