I apologize for what must be a repeat thread, but the feature that searches topic threads is broken and an advanced search of the forum failed to locate anything.

I was just wondering if I could get clarification on how years of service are counted at USUHS?

I know you are an O-1 officer from day 1 of med school. But how does this affect how years of service are counted for retirement? Promotion, pay and payback?

For example, I assume the 7 year payback start after residency is done, (I want to do residency in the navy).

But since I am O-1 on day 1 of med school does that mean that when I become O-3 on graduating from med school that I am payed as O-3 with 4 years of service?

I have heard that the 4 years at USUHS dosn't count towards promotion, which starts during internship. I have also heard that promotion is every 6years, so 3 years after residency you make 0-4, and at end payback you are 2 years from 0-5, (I have read 80% make it to 0-5).

In regards to retirement, I have read that the 4 USUHS years don't count towards retirement until you make it to 20 years, then they are counted.

So in essence, once you get to 20 years you can retire with a pension of 60% of base pay, or stay in for 6 more years to get the top 75%.

Are my understandings of how the 4 USUHS years counted correct? If not I would greatly appreciate it if someone would correct me.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please have a wonderful day and a terrific week.

Yes, it's a repeat thread that searching could answer for you, but I'll be nice and play along.

Your time at USUHS counts for nothing until you hit 20 years. This means pay, promotion, and retirement. At graduation you will be an O3 with Zero days of service.

Promotion happens at different year marks for different ranks. O4 is usually around 6 years after graduation. O5 and O6 can happen at various times after that, but six years would probably be a decent average.

Payback time is a bit more convoluted than you make it seem, but in the simplistic form yes it does start after residency is completed (this is a very simplistic view, but will work for your needs at this time.)
