For those who are doing/did fellowship, when did you start reaching out for job opportunities?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I don't start my fellowship (CCM) until next year but I have a pretty strong geographic preference. I realize it is very early but I also realize that time flies. My question is when is a good time to reach out to groups that I am interested in? Is there any utility in doing so prior to starting fellowship?

Thanks!

Never hurts to start putting feelers out since you are pretty sure about geography.

Are you thinking doing CCM+OR? In the geographical area you’re interested in you may need to look at the academic places for that kind of job. In a community setting the anesthesia group might not be able to accommodate you as a part-time person for their staffing.

So yeah, start the looking process now.

Great time to start reaching out, making connections. A LITTLE early to be interviewing and signing a contract, but not unreasonable. Especially if they're willing to give you a stipend during your fellowship.

For my job, I actually reached out August 2021, interviewed September or October, accepted the job in December, then started in July 2023.

Would you recommend sending interest emails to job postings on gas work? Also, should I be attaching a CV etc?

Yeah I’m open to all options. If there’s are groups in the area I’m looking at, would you suggest just emailing them and detailing my timeline and expressing interest?

I had a month between residency and fellowship. Spent that month studying for boards and job hunting. Signed before fellowship started.

Where are you looking geographically ? DM me , I do OR/CCM

I'm CCM, as well, and was in contact with practices before fellowship started, to get a feel of the situation. Applying and interviewing was Sep-Nov of fellowship year, and I had a signed contract by Christmas. At my new job, my partner Anes/CCM guy just started his CA3 year, and he's been under contract with the hospital for about six months already. I will admit, though, that he's a bit of an exception, as he has strong ties to the region, and connections with the department.

While it never hurts to reach out early to sus things out, practices can change. Leadership can turn over, private groups can lose the contract or become hospital employees, the staffing model can change, etc. There was one group I had been talking to a bunch when I was active duty before fellowship. It seemed very promising, the leadership thought having a partner in the ICU would be a good thing, but ultimately when I interviewed, they couldn't sell the idea to the rest of the partners, and I wasn't offered the job.

This all makes sense. I think part of the reason I am curious is because the region I’m going to end up in is a place I’ve got no ties to on paper but just a place I’ve always wanted to live. So I figure earlier might be better to reach out to groups.

If you have no ties, then start sending out feelers now to get a sense of the players in the region. Any prior residents or fellows from your program get jobs out there?

We’ve got some distant grads out there and 1-2 recent people but it’s not a super popular region for our grads to go.

Doesn't have to include the CV, but they may ask for it pretty early on. I'd say the reaching out right now can be pretty informal, just looking for information.
