For those who are taking a year off........

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I graduated at the end of August 2004, so I had to take 8 months off. I worked full time, relaxed, and read. I feel refreshed. My med school starts May 31st, so I am glad I had some time off before classes start.

to prepare for medical school you should make your mind dull rather than keeping it sharp.

Hey Dr2010 haven't seen you since my current events thread tanked. Thanks for replying though, you seem really interesting 👍 .

Anyway, I would love to take a year off, but if I do that I will be off my parent's medical insurance and I will have no med student insurance to replace it. Bastard medical system 😡 Going to school sucks because you are in effect homeless for however long you choose to study. Oh well, back to the books.

it's a mind numbing curriculum, you need to train yourself to be able to keep your brain at 1% operating capacity for 2+ years and remain sane.

thanks for the response. makes sense.

Hey LadyJubilee hows it going there should be some more current events threads.

I also want to apply the end of my senior year which means I will have a year off, I hope to get a research position whereever my bro goes to undergrad he'll be a sophomore when I apply so I think thatll be cool.

Also i think itll just help recharge after college and Ill be at prime capacity for interviews and the such.

I'm curious to know what you have been doing to keep your mind sharp for med school in August 2005?

Good question. I am going to apply for the 2007 cycle in June 2006, and thats the same month I graduate. I have NO idea what to do for a year. I want to relax, work, travel, etc, but at the same time I want to do something that might bolster my application then next time around in case I don't get in the first time.

What are some of you guys doing? Working? Grad School??

I'd like to know exactly what kind of jobs you can get with a Bachelors of Science having majored in Biology? 😡

I'm getting towards the end of my year off now. Graduated in August 04 and will be starting this August, and during that time, took a few months to do very little, threw in some traveling/visiting family and now I'm in the midst of a massage therapy course. I think it's a great way to get your mind in tune with the human body and gives you lots of experience dealing with people. I would definitely recommend it to others unsure of what to do during their year off, I really think it helped with my application.

So I had about 21 months before I started medical school and here is what I did:
Worked for my parents Chiropractic office and saved money = 7 weeks
Went to Australia = 4 weeks
Went to New Zealand = 4 weeks
Started work full time as a Clinical Research Coordinator = 14 months
Going to Mexico = 1 week
Spent time in Chicago = 2 weeks
Las Vegas = 3 days (that's all that's necessary)
Camping = 1 week
Read cheezy novels = 3-5 novels
Watched a lot of TV = 2 hours a night
Applied for Medical School = This took me from about March (writing personal statement to October when I got accepted)
Working for the National Youth Sports Program = 5 weeks
Found a man and am enjoying the newness of going out with someone = 3 months

And That's me in a nutshell. I am just having fun, making money, going out for drinks, hanging out with friends and beeing productive as best I can without stressing myself out.

Have fun during your time off, let yourself unwind and soak up the fact that your brain is basically on vacation (although not totally). Stay linked to school somehow (either through your job or through volunteering) , but do yourself a favor and just chill for a second, otherwise in medical school, you're still going to be an anal undergrad who is trying WAY to hard to be a med student.

I play a lot of video games and do a crossword puzzle every day...I think it keeps my brain from going totally mushy.

I went to work w. a tertiary care center. Got to learn alot about clinical research.

what did you do at the tertiary care center?
