Dear friends,
I recently ended my journey of trying to get admitted into a dental school in the us. I faced many ups and downs and got tired (even sick) very often at all phases right from preparation till the acceptance I thought I would make an effort to bring together the people who have had a hectic journey and are just enjoying the friuts of it and people who are on their journey and getting the tiredness over them. My mission would be fulfilled if i can console at least one traveler to carry on his journey and reach his destination.

Thanks a lot for encouraging the students.
If you don't mind could you please share your stats. When were you interviewed??
I am waiting for that magic IV call from BU.

Dear dentbaby,

your stats are pretty decent to get you into bu, when I didnt have those numbers i used to really get scared looking at them so in order not to scare people who are preparing for the exam i will put them here only if u insist, i feel a good part1 takes you longer in the curve, even a single mark after 90 makes a big difference so the higher you get in 90s the greater the chances.work experience in the home country and us(which really does not mean much to them if u have a good part1, if ur part1 is low this might help). hope i answered your questions.

I am sorry to hear of your difficulty in getting into a program. It used to be competitive to get into a similar program. But now it's even more difficult than ever.

It's even worse for those who manage to graduate from such program nowadays. Finally get a dental license to practice and you face yet another road block... employment. Employment is very hard to come by, and I know several dentists who had spent years and years in school facing the prospect of being unemployed or underemployed... Most corporate positions treat you like a commodity and as an expendable. Most private offices will not even look at you without some experience. I've known several Indian dentists who finally qualified in the US and moved back to India or to the Middle East in search of a full-time job.

Let's all hope that this recession will be over soon. Oh, and hopefully those persevering students will make it through the tough competition!

dear teethie,

you are welcome, i am not doing anything extra except trying to prove people who are struggling that they are very close to their finish and to keep sticking to their task in spite of whatever hurdles they face.

Dear blue tooth hunter,

It is nice to hear from a senior member like you. It seems like you are an orthodontist or a resident. You must have faced many odds to get there. I appreciate you spending time for upcoming dentists. Thank you

Thank you very much for ur reply.I am getting scared as there are many people with my scores waiting for an Interview call.So could you plz PM ur scores as it is really scary for those without that score.
Thanks a lottt in advance

Dear dent baby,

I know that most of the people who got accepted along with me had apart1 score of 94 and 93.results of most of the california universities are not out yet and people who get in multiple universities and bu will choose their preffered university and this makes more number of seats available for people waiting for interview at bu.

👍👍Thanks a ton for the encouragement during my worst times,
How can I forget to thank you for the selfless work you do for others?

I loved these videos as her struggle and success story matches hundred cents with my own story. Thanks a ton, really appreciate it.👍👍

dear mission isp,

I appreciate your time in acknowledging my petty efforts. I am honored to have the appreciation of a person who had the rare privilege of choosing the very best school among the best dental schools. Wish you good luck with your future endeavors.

I didn't have the rare priviledge last year, I fought the battle and learnt the system and its requirement thoroughly. All I can say is that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE AS IMPOSSIBLE ITSELF SAYS 'I M POSSIBLE'.

So, I felt saying it to you that there was also TWIST in my own story to achive the RARE PRIVILEDGE this year finally.

'Accepting is LOOSING,
Fighting is WINNING,
Getting what you want is ACHIEVING'

Hope my one cent helps to motivate everyone here.
'YOU CAN DO IT'

Good luck everyone.

Dear Mission ISP,

Those words were great I hope they would really help people realize that to fight harder is the best thing to do when situations seem as though they are not working in our favor. Thank you for sharing your secret "learn about the boxing ring before you can knock out the opponent".

# Donts':

I keep saying ppl 'don't trust big mouths'; I extend it to say that don't even trust what I say.
There is no point entirely trusting on others based upon what others tell AND what you HEAR from a third party person.

# Dos':

If you want to learn SWIMMING, you gotta JUMP into the OCEAN

Keep calling and asking dental schools, talk and discuss your issue to director/relevant authentic person of dental school, Visit few dental schools and meet alumnis/current students/mentors/professors to learn the whole system, keep yourself updated about every single move from ADA - awareness & self-realization is the most important thing. Get familiar with the system and know it well from scratch, inside-out. Belive me, it will work a lot that way apart from your routine NBD/TOEFL scores.

Hope that helps! 🙂

Good luck everyone!!!👍:xf:👍

Well said. you have condensed your experience into a nutshell.Wishing you success all the way long. Keep up your good work of helping others help themselves :highfive:

@possible and mission isp,

Thanks, possible and missionISP ...
specially, possible's forward step to help students like me is applausable.
on the other hand, mission isp's whole journey is so heartening and refreshing.

@ mission isp,

pacific is my dream school too. Bad luck, i did not get an interview call at pacific this year. I hope i get next year into pacific, hopefully. i had misbelief about many things but ongoing discussion here is so healthy, it helped me to broaden my view. pacific looks great, lets see if i can get admission next year. my statistics are, 88/3.4/101/little observership experience in us/extra-curricular certificates and presentation from various countries i visited;

I had an interview at ucsf but hopeless, i am on low-alternate-list.
uic - almost rejected, didnt hear anything yet
bu - did not hear anything yet

i do not see any hopes this year. I do not want to go to nyu. what should I do to improve my profile for next year application? everything is hopeless for me but I got inspiration from various thread replies by mission isp and i am ready to forget what happend perviously. should i retake part-1?

Thanks, possible and mission isp ...
Please, i need replies from both of you.

Dear Guru bhai,

I really will stay with you and help you in what ever petty way to get to your destination. Unlike other privilaged people I did not have multiple options to choose from the only school i got acceptance so far is Bu, i do not have any complaints against anybody except my ignorance. As our friend mission isp has pointed out we need to know the system perfectly to make the best out of our situation. I liked your thought of giving part 1 again because by writing part 1 again I realized how ignorant I was of my potential as my score improved by 10 marks. You have a very high chance of improving your score and chances by taking the exam again. As far as NYU is concerned if I were you I would attend the interview, get a first hand information about the program and then decide on accepting the offer or not if I had a chance to. I appreciate your courage to stand tall against rough wind and face the challenge. Your courage will get you where ever you want. Any questions are welcome. Good luck

Your id is very much cool, I liked it. 👍

Thanks for appreciation,

I find your score good enough to give you admission in any school you want. You seem to be young and I feel you have sufficient things on profile at your age. Come on, be positive. It seems You have 88 (nbd-1) on first attempt, you're pretty much intellegent - just few steps away from your destination.

Firstly, I wish you all the very best to get admission this year itself. Keep finger crossed for BU, you should expect late acceptance anytime. 🙂

I had worser experience last year and had only 81 on first attempt, 86 on second - applied with that score and didn't get even interview call (rejection before interview!!!😱😱). Anyways, that is history. I never wanted to accept the defeat as 'accepting is loosing!'. I retook exam for third time to get 95 finally, didn't waste time and took part-2 (as soon as I could!) to get 81. Within this period, I also kept visiting schools (UOP/UCSF/LLU - have senior friends there!!) in Ca and learnt how the admission process works from inside-out, for example, collected information about all west coast schools, practised mock interviews, practised probable bench test exercises a lot, used duggans' dvds to be thorough with all etc.

This year too, received lots of rejection and alternate listing (almost hopeless!) before getting three acceptances (all of sudden, into action!) within previous 2-3 weeks. So, you never know as honestly system here is crazy sometimes. Wait for your turn and prepare yourself well before your turn comes up.

Just like POSSIBLE said, you may retake part-1 to score in 90s.
You may go ahead with PLAN-B too, take part-2 and get in 83-88 range. Do observership in dental office &/or volunteer dental assistance in a dental school if possible, visit dental schools nearby you and try getting 'research assistance ship' - whatever you do in US, don't forget to get good recommendation from US dentists/dental school professors. Improve your resume as much you can. Same time, prepare well for bench exams and mock interviews next time onwards. Get beforehand information about any schools you interview. Your interviewer checks your intellectual curiosity and interest for school. Most important thing on interview is not what you have on paper but what you can deliver to school in future, Sell yourself that is what every senior friend adviced me.

Let me know if need know anything else. You can PM me, feel free!!!

Bottomline - 'Accepting is loosing, fighting is winning'. Be positive, that's key!!!

Dear Mission ISP & Guru bhai,

I am so happy that I could bring the giver and the needy to one platform and your posts are so thoughtful, as I read your message I realize how strong failures can motivate people to succeed strongly. I am really happy that both of you could meet each other and am proud of the fact that you are spending a lot of time to help people like me to reinvent their true potential. MI your persistence is amazing, please continue to inspire people to achieve.

I loved the way you motivate ppl on every thread.

Come on, you don't say that you didn't have multiple options. If I were in your shoe, I surely would have gone ahead with BU. We definitely should try our level best but Sometimes, we should leave fruits for god to decide. even after plenty of efforts, everyone receives what one is destined for.
I was not even interviewed at BU last year, if I were .. then surely I would have gone ahead with BU to be your batchmate 🙂🙂🙂. Good part on your side is that you were successful to save your one precious year of life.

But I wasn't. It was not a part of my destiny and that made me stronger as a person. I struggled for more, I dreamed for more, I worked for more and I fought the self-battle for more ... finally, I achived what I stuggled, dreamed, worked, battled and wanted. Hope that provides everyone a moral support.

Good luck!!!

Dear Mission ISP,

I am more than happy to be chosen by BU since I know how my other friends who are more hardworking and with more zeal are still not getting things right to work for them. As I wish to specialize I do want to have the privilage of choosing from when I apply for my master program I am sure that the training and atmosphere at BU would help me with that. I am still more happy to meet friends like you who show genuine interest and who lead by example. I wish to remain your true friend and wish to continue my journey in achieving my dreams with support of friends like you. I cant stop appreciating your style of getting your point across strongly with power packed sentence construction. Hope many people join this path of caring for the tired travelers.

Hi Possible,

Pain is Gain,

After the pains I went through, I worked a bit on my speech delivery previous six months. I wish if there were more GDs (Group discussions .. likes of MBA schools' standard ) than personal interviews at various dental schools. Just said so cuz you mentioned about 'power packed sentence construction'. Kidding

Nope, honestly .. I need to improve a lot as a person and as a professional. There's always an open window for improvement as said, success is a journey and not a destination.

Your this 'unique thread' step is really awesome, hats off;
Hope I also have friends like you around to learn things in future. 👍

Thanks a lot!!!

BRAVO Possible n MissionISP!!!!!!🙂
Hats off to ur work over here and ur struggle n care for all juniors lik me!!!!!!
N Gurubhai, Best of luck to u.........U will def. get into ur dream school........

@ Possible,

thank you very much for encouraging words, I am really grateful to your help. What should i do? do i retake part-1 or go ahead with part-2 as i got interviews at few schools this year too but could not perform well, may be less than school expectations? i agree with you, i need to understand system very well. well-said, mission isp. i had applied to nyu through caapid, may be i will go for an interviw at least. thanks once again, possible.

i must say your journey is so inspiring, it teaches me to be positive that i was missing a bit previously. thanks for moral support. sure, i'll keep all advices in mind. there is a lot of work still to be done. i guess, taking part-2 makes more sense than repeating part-1 still i am confused a bit. i'll ask more doubts on your pm box, thanks for permiting me to pm. hope to help me. thanks a lot for encouragement.

Dear Mission ISP,

Your posts in other threads and here reveal that you had really analysed your failures seriously and worked on even the minute details to put youself ahead of others. It tells me your commitment towards your dreams. Earlier I had a little doubt about my dreams and pursuing my long term professional goals I think if I also begin to work on my failures like you did one day my dreams will come true. Hats off to your commitment. I started this thread with the intention of trying to make others realize that they are not too far away from their destination which is blocked by some twists and turns but I realized that I can also cross my self limiting beliefs by stretching a little bit. Thank you for all the help that you had been to us.

Dear Dr arms,

You are always too generous with your words and i am lucky to be spending the next two years of my life with thoughtful people like you at bu.

Dear Guru Bhai,

I do not agree with your statement about your performance at the interview, my little experience tells me that there is hardly any difference between people who make it into the final selection and who do not after the interview. I feel that we need to change just the icing on the cake to make it more appealing to the people interviewing. Most of this comes from knowing the system well.
It is really very tough to decide whether to go for part1 again or go with part2 i feel a lot of this depends on places you were waitlisted and whether they would be willing to accept your updates and your forthcoming interviews. can I pm you so that we can discuss about the specifics.

My Sincere thanks, I am glad to know that I could be some help to you.
A free bird has more freedom than a caged one. So, we should broaden our spectrum of vision rather self-limiting our beliefs. Neither attitude nor altitude, it's aptitude that counts the most. everyone is committed towards own dreams, we all together need to go one step ahead and that step is the self-motivation. Hope almighty god helps us all to overcome our weaknesses and we develop a divine and positive environment all over full of peace and unity.

I'm agree with possible. She's probably advising to be more positive. I agree with the interviews here - it's the craziest and unexpectable experience. I feel every candidate has the same potential and energy level. Everyone comes for interview with nearly same level of preparation. I liked especially when possible addressed that 'icing the cake' makes it more appealing. Pizza without cheese is no fun, right? I already sent you pm for your queries, hope that helps.

thanks a ton, possible. that makes more sense to me now. I'll keep it in mind from now on. yes, you can pm me for sure and may i do the same to you when i have some queries? thanks once again for the motivation!

@ mission isp

i think more i read you post, more i get inspired. thanks for being there with students like me. i read you pm just now. thanks for all pain you took to write down every minute detail so well. i appreciate your help.

Dear Guru Bhai,

u can do so and feel free to ask and i would be more than happy to do whatever help possible. Good luck with ur mission.

Dear Friends,
I got this little interesting story from a friend of mine. I believe this is from a site www.dailyom.com sorry i dont have the link but i have the story that i am putting it here, see if it intrests you.

One day I decided to quit... (a story)

One day I decided to quit… I quit my work, my relationship, my spirituality… I wanted to quit my life. I went to the woods to have one last talk with God. “God”, I said. “Can you give me one good reason not to quit?” His answer surprised me…

“Look around”, He said. “Do you see the fern and the bamboo?” “Yes”, I replied.

“When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. I gave them light. I gave them water. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor.

Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed.
But I did not quit on the bamboo.

In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo.”

He said, “In year three there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In year four, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed.
I would not quit.”

“Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant… But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive.

I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle,” he said to me.

“Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots?” I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you.”

“Don't compare yourself to others,” he said. “The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern. Yet they both make the forest beautiful.”

“Your time will come”, God said to me. “You will rise high.” “How high should I rise?” I asked.

“How high will the bamboo rise?” He asked in return. “As high as it can?” I questioned.

“Yes.” He said, “Give me glory by rising as high as you can.”

I left the forest and bring back this story. I realized that God will never give up on you. He will never give up on you!

hi mission isp i read ur thread .its really inspiring . cud u plz tel mme wat is procedure to do 'research assistance ship'

hi mission isp i read ur thread .its really inspiring . cud u plz tel mme wat is procedure to do 'research assistance ship'

Hi Amarbeer, I liked your curiosity 👍👍

Practically speaking, no one gets time to do so as it requires lots of extra time and dedication, you have to maintain your grades (B+ for most schools) to continue research work and DDS/DMS programs hardly give you extra time/space to do so. At least, this bitter fact is so truthful for dental schools I visited, international current students hardly get time to do so. While doing DDS/DMS, I rarely saw anyone doing RA till now. It's just overwhelming thing !!!

I personally have very little interest for research but assisting a professor with research provides many other valuable opportunities including developing a mentoring relationship with a faculty member, professors know you very well by this experience and may favor you getting outstanding letters of recommendations. So, indirectly, RA (research Assistant ship) experinece helps to give you admission for DDS/DMD in the same school in future.

# How to convince a faculty member at dental schools?

firstly, you gotta visit dental schools nearby you and visit them at regular interval to be friends with current students there. Current students may introduce you to a faculty member actively involved in a research. Keep your files and documents ready to show all your previous best achivements and be a 'pakka' (strong) salesman/woman the day you get opportunity to sell yourself. Learn presenting yourself and lead a faculty member towards the direction you want him/her to be, Let faculty know that you're interested in getting involved in research. Approach faculty during office hours and ask for leads on who might be looking for research assistants. When you find a faculty member who is looking for an assistant, carefully and honestly describe what you can offer (computer skills, Internet skills, statistical skills, and the number of hours per week you're available). Let the faculty member know that you're willing to work hard (be honest!). Ask about specific requirements such as the duration of the project, what your responsibilities will be, and the length of commitment (a semester or a year?). Remember that while you might not find anyone working on a project that you find fascinating, you will obtain excellent experience; besides your interests most likely will change as you gain more experience and education.

Explain him/her that you can do the following for him/her:
- Collecting data by surveys and interviews
- Scoring and entering data into a spreadsheet
- Conducting literature searches, making copies of articles, and ordering unavailable articles
- Developing thoughtful and lively new research topics, build ideas on them
- explaining your Intermediate/advanced computer skills such as word processing, specific software knowledge, spreadsheet, scheduling and statistical analysis programs
- Assisting in preparing submissions for local conferences
- Working on poster or oral presentations for professional conferences
- Assisting faculty in preparing a manuscript to submit the results of your collaborative research to a scientific journal

Bottomline - self-confidence is the key, convince a faculty member about your very much own potential, activeness and enthusiasm for the subject!!!

No process in the world is one sided. Symbiosis works almost every single place. Newton's THIRD law tells: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction!!!

Don't think only you get benefit out of RA, Benefits are for Faculty too: They get a hardworking student to do some labor-intensive parts of research. Many faculty have ideas for studies that they don't have time to conduct. This way, faculty witnesses a student's professional growth, which can be quite rewarding in future to get admission into the same school. As you can see, student-professor research relationships offer benefits to all involved; however, the commitment to become a research assistant is a big one.

I prefer 'CLINICAL RESEARCH' and I feel it comparatively is easier to get in,
Things You will Need are (Minimum requirements, more is better!):

1) Previous Clinical experience (varies)
2) Bachelor of Science degree

# Steps:

1. Prepare to become a clinical research assistant by obtaining the necessary educational requirements. You will need a Bachelor of Science degree and few years of practical clinical experience in applied dentistry, previous research in home nation or even let it be dental material companies/pharmaceutical industry/similar background organization.
2. Expect that you may be able to become a clinical research assistant without having any previous clinical experience if you possess an advanced degree, such as MDS or Ph.D. from home country
3. Be prepared to demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills. The clinical research assistant is often called on to recruit investigators for clinical studies, as well as prepare protocols, draft procedures and reports and present them at meetings and conferences
4. Be aware that you should have at least a basic understanding of statistical analysis and data management systems
5. Know that the clinical research assistant also plays the role of "watchdog" in terms of making sure clinical trials adhere to regulatory standards and ethical guidelines. To this end, you must be familiar with Good Clinical Practice standards regulated by the Federal Drug Administration.
6. Various online professional organization offers an annual conference, networking resources to find a job as a clinical research assistant, advanced educational courses and certification programs
7. Browse the online classifieds on the Society of Clinical Research Associates website to apply for a position as a clinical research assistant
Hope it helps 👍👍👍,

hi mission isp,

i appreciate all information you share here,
the more i read you posts, the more i feel that there's lots of work still to be done. it kind of boosts me a lot. Thanks for encouragement, i also reside near one school and i think i should give it a try. i never knew i can do this in particular. thanks a lot for your selfless share of information.
