Hey everyone
so heres my story... im planning to apply to university of toronto pharmacy with one year of undergrad. however, i keep hearing u of t is competitive, hard to get into with one year of undergrad, etc etc and of course im already discouraged, but i know that i have to work hard to accomplish my goal. my question to all those who got into u of t with only one year of undergrad, is what were your marks in each of the required subjects [chem, bio, calc, and your social science/humanities course]. i would like to know this info just so i know where i need to be in order to have a good shot at the prize. and ya i know that pcat is already part of the app. process [u guys are lucky u didnt have to take it!] anyway thanks for your help. hope you guys are having a good time in pharm school! work hard

sorry..bad miscommunication on my part. u of t as in university of toronto. sorry for not being clear!!

Here's the thing...most people don't get in after first year (they say only 30 do)...you should read the FAQ section of the site...it has some info on how the required courses are counted...

BTW...since only 30 are admitted with only 1 year of undergrad...and the fact that this is an American site...there won't be many people answering this question for you...

Also, I've said this in a lot of my posts, and I don't mean to be rude when I say it...but...follow the site...it is really good at telling you what you need to know to get in...take it from someone who got in with only using that site (I found the SDN site after my application was complete, a few days before the acceptances were given out)

Only 30? All I know is 40% of the students already hold degrees. That means the other 60% did 1-3 years in university.

Hey! I don't think I'll be much help to you since I didn't write the PCAT, however, I did one year of undergrad at the University of Western Ontario, and was accepted off the waitlist this year. To be honest, my marks were actually not that great. I think it was the UTPAT that helped me in my admission. From what I hear, the entering class average this year was approximately 83%. But don't quote me on that, because I'm not too sure. But my marks were definitely on the lower end of the spectrum.

Keep in mind that the University of Toronto does not discriminate against how many years of study in undergrad you have taken. There were likely more upper years admitted in the past due to their increased maturity and better writing skills, which were translated through the UTPAT. However, now that the PCAT is implemented, the only thing you can really do is study really hard for both a competitive GPA, and the PCAT. Good Luck and Work Hard!!! 🙂

Really?! When did they announce that only 30 students had 1 year of undergrad?! I thought there were more...?

They didn't quote this in Pharmacy...BUTTT at the beginning of last school year they had this info. thing...my friend went to it and the people representing pharmacy said they take people so 1/8 are first years...which is 30 people (and I have heard this from a lot of people)...and yes I have run into quite a few first years but at the same time we know 40% have degrees (from the presentation) and most of the poeple our year seems to be 2nd year...there are quite a few third years too...first years are not as common...I've met maybe 15 first years (at most)

BUT...because they didn't say this in the presentation, it might in fact be different (though I have doubts it's much different because in that info. thing they had, they said they try to keep the first year numbers to 1/8 of those admitted)

Don't quote me on the above numbers though...the numbers make sense to me in terms of what I've seen in class...it also makes sense to cap the first year numbers just because it is a professional program and they probably want maturity, as mentioned above...

Something else I wanted to say was that the faculty realizes that A LOT of those who were not granted admission were very qualified for the program BUT they only have 240 seats...so...make sure you kill the test

entering pharm school after more than a year of undergrad isn't a bad thing at all..you would've spent more time developing strategies for time management, dealing w/ heavy course loads, understanding concepts, etc. that pharmacy education will be easier to tackle when you do start. i heard many ppl say that really the hardest part abt pharm school is the volume of work that can be overwhelming

so give yourself time to apply, and that you're gaining something whether or not you're admitted at your first go.

lolz - I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but they do look more heavily on a good chemistry mark!

OverTheCounter - i guess u're right then~ I definitely met a lot of people with degrees! I feel like they didn't tell us much in our presentation compared to the previous years?

and I agree with shunsistoesis - more years of study definitely is an added advantage! I still haven't quite honed my studying and time management skills, which would definitely come in handy when you have no exemptions and deal with 9 courses!

No idea how much they said in previous years...but I feel like they didn't give us much of a breakdown...

i applied firsy year with a 3.6 gpa, no dice.

my korean friend had a 4.0 and got in first year. he was a genius though.
