For Utah students; rdep at large

Decided on Midwestern az.

How is the RDEP at Large different than the RDEP through Creighton? Or is it the same thing?

Another question, what was you guys' GPA/DAT scores? I am a finance major, I have a 3.87 GPA/3.9 SGPA and I got just got a 20AA. What are my odds?

RDEP Creighton is where you attend the University of Utah for the first year, and then you move to Creighton for the final three years of dental school. You pay in-state tuition the first year, and then CU's tuition while you are in Nebraska. If you come back to Utah and practice, you will be reimbursed $20k per year for three years, for a total of $60k.

RDEP at large is available for 10 students (who aren't doing RDEP Creighton) at any accredited dental school. If you come back to Utah, you'll be reimbursed $20k per year for four years, for a total of $80k.

They are trying to make tuition closer to in-state for Utah residents.

Also, your numbers are excellent. How are you EC's and other activities? Get your application in on June 1. Dr. Powell and Dr. Lowder will come to your school in the fall and do a kind of pre-interview with you, and then you'll have the actual interview at the U of U. As long as you impress them, you'll be in great shape.

They are decent. I have around 35 hours of shadowing and a ton of work experience. I interviewed with Dr. Powell last year and he was awesome. He seemed impressed and wanted me to email him once I took my DAT. I am confused though cause I want to get my applications ready but the website says 2012 applications wont be available until June 4th. Is that right or am I crazy? Because I cant really get letters of recommendation until I have the application number right?

I would definitely up your shadowing hours, some schools like 50+. AADSAS says it will be available June 1, which is the day you can create an account, add all of your classes, and send in your letters of recommendation.

The biggest thing is your relationship with Powell. If you are competitive (which you are), then Powell can get you in or keep you out. From what I understand, Creighton's admissions committee makes the final decision, but they are heavily influenced by Powell's recommendations.

I plan on shadowing another dentist in about a month and an oral surgeon later this year. Of course I want to get my application in as quickly as possible so I dont want to wait for these. Can I put on the application hours that I expect to have or no?

Aren't there tons of dentists in Utah? Why would Utah be trying to get more?

Yes, there's a place on the application that lets you forecast how many hours you plan on shadowing. As long as you do the majority of what you forecast you'll be in good shape.

There are more dentists retiring than entering Utah. Utah is about average compared to other states as far as the number of dentists per capita.
