After DMD/DDS, you can work as a general dental practitioner... U won't be able to work as an orthodontist as you won't be board certified in US....
To practice as an orthodontist, you need to apply for the Advanced Graduate program in Orthodontics. It is a 3 year Orthodontic program and will let you practice as an orthodontist. but you will get your license to practice as an orthodontist only in few states....
But if you want to do only Ortho, then it's worthwhile to go for Ortho instead of DDS/DMD

But as a DMD/DDS there is no limit for me to do ortho, right?

As a last question, advanced graduate program is not same with residency?

You won't be able to do Ortho legally..... several general practitioners perform Ortho procedures, but that is not legal as they don't hold an Ortho degree..... You won't be able to do Ortho in US, until you get an Orthodontics degree from US

It's the same.... different universities have different terminologies for the program.....

I'm myself an orthodontist from another country and I'm trying to get in any university for the Advanced Graduate program in Orthodontics as I want to practice Orthodontics only

Is it possible to get in a program for foreign orthodontist? I mean it is very competetive residency, do we have a chance or some kind of advantage because we are orthodontist already or we still really need very very good resume and gpa?

I would say really good resume, GPA and some work or research experience in US. It is indeed very competitive.

Sure. Since you have already known how to do ortho, you don't need an extra MDS after DDS/DMD.
I know I asked too much but can earn money as non accredited orthodontist?Should I run my own office or does someone give a ortho job?I know that's something no one can know for sure but hypothetically 😀 ?

You can't run a clinic as a non-accredited orthodontist as you won't be holding a license from USA to practice Ortho. As a general practitioner, some dentists perform Ortho procedures, but it's better you don't go down that path. You have done Ortho in your home country, it's better you pursue it in US and then work legally as an orthodontist.

The penalty for an uncredited orthodontist will depend on the state can be from 6 months - 5 years in jail. So, I will recommend you apply to any ortho program to get your license 😀

😀 I guess, I couldn't express myself. I mean if I finish an IDP and get a licence as a DDS/DDM dentist, then there is no law that forbid me to do ortho. Because I will be licensed and accredited dentist in US.As a GP I can do ortho, I believe.Am I wrong?
I am not gonna work without licence. But according to your reply as I understand, any GP who does ortho or endo or pedo will end up in jail.
Is it true?

does doing ortho as a gp give me a trouble or any issue with insurance companies?
Thank you

I have no idea about insurance companies and I don't think they will give trouble. There might be several GPs who must be doing Ortho, but the problem will come if someone reports you that you are practicing Ortho without licence. Maybe if any patient decides to sue, you might face problems because of practicing Ortho. It's totally about doing it till you get caught and trust me it's not worth getting caught....

I just researched that on ADA and AAO website, there is not a single sentence that even imply general dentist to forbid to do orthos. Even in this forum, there is a discussion in orthodontist that gps doing ortho and no one says they cant do it, the only thing they say they do it bad, just doing social 6 is not ortho, kind of discussions.and i think they are right, in my country gps do ortho and they are really doing it bad but doing ortho is not forbidden. As i research in US, it is the same.So in order to do IDP and then ORTHO, basically just getting licence as Gp is enough to ortho.

If you feel confident that it's right then you should take that path..... regarding my perspective, it's one person's opinion......it's totally up to you how do you want to pursue practicing in USA.....

thank you, you helped me a lot, i am just trying to be sure that is there a penalty or not.thank you

You are welcome... Do you want to practice Ortho exclusively or do you want to practice general dentistry too??

No i love ortho and all i want to do is ortho, that what i am good at.

But if you get a DDS/DMD degree, u can not practice only as an orthodontist. You need to practice as a general practitioner and Ortho can be a part of your practice, but not exclusively. Only an orthodontist can exclusively practice Ortho.....so think about it.....

I am myself an orthodontist and I too want to practice exclusively Ortho. That is the reason I'm trying to get in an Ortho program.....Ortho program are real competitive and difficult for international graduates to get in but you can try for it....get some work experience in US or earn a degree in US before pursuing Ortho programs....

Yes, you are right. But i can do ortho as an associate and a gp who knows to do ortho is a plus, i guess.Even if i only want to do ortho as you say thats impossible, but as a gp i can show ortho as my strong side so with time i can treat more ortho patients than fillings. Also to become orthodontist is really expensive, one should first get a dmd/dds which costs appr. 200.000$ and then have to apply to ortho residency which is very very competetive and even if you got accepted you have to study 3 more years.that costs totaly 400.000$ which is really huge debt. If we can do directly ortho residency and work any state we want, maybe i can give it a shot but one can not.And thats very very competetive and as blogs and forums say without US DDS/DMD chances are very low. Thats my opion , i of course want to do ortho only but if i cant then i should adapt to find a way to live.

GPs can practice Ortho...just like they do Endo, Oral Surgery, Pedo! You can do private patients, and PPO insurance as a general practitioner. Not Medicare patients which is the only thing a Ortho licence is good for....large scale Medicare mill bracket practice. You cannot Advertise yourself as an Orthodontist just like the other specialties...but yes you can do bracket and wire.

It is LEGAL, please dont spread inaccurate information you know to be false. Provide the documentation where it is ILLEGAL for a GP to practice Ortho.

You can do ortho as a GP. Plenty of GPs that have an ortho only practice. Dont listen to that guy, he doesnt know what he is talking about
