Hi everyone;I'm a foreign graduate 2001planning to take USMLE step1; do I need to be enrolled in Kaplan online course(can't do the live course);is it enough to self study and just get all the materials I need;please advise thanks🙂

It all depends on your practice exams. You should take them every week while studying to see how you are doing.

I'm seeking advice on that myself. May I ask you? Why do international medical students take the USMLE Step 1 after graduation? Is it a requirement to take it? Can't an undergrad take it? I'm quite confused. I've seen only grads taking it in my country. Thank you. I thought you'd know bc you are an international grad yourself.

You can take step 1 after you have been ECFMG certified. That may require your school to complete certain paperwork that is not available until after you graduate.

This doesn't make any sense. In order to become ECFMG certified you have to first pass Steps 1, 2CK and 2CS. So how can you take Step 1 AFTER you become ECFMG certified?!

Yeah, you need to be enrolled in the ECFMG in order to take step 1, is the point.

Your school needs to sponsor you.

Can you please tell me what that "certain paperwork" includes? 😕 Does that mean I cannot take the exam as an Undergrad? 🙁 It'd be a shame if I can't bc I'm already studying for it without paying much attention to my final exam here, which is totally different type of question,MSQs. Thank you again for the info.

Your school has to sponsor your application to the ECFMG. Then, you can register for the USMLE through your ECFMG account.

Application for ECFMG Certification

The Application for ECFMG Certification became a requirement for ECFMG Certification on September 15, 2010. Effective on this date, international medical students/graduates must submit an Application for ECFMG Certification before they can apply to ECFMG for examination. The Application for ECFMG Certification consists of questions that require applicants to confirm their identity, contact information, and graduation from or enrollment in a medical school that is listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). As part of the application, international medical students/graduates must also confirm their understanding of the purpose of ECFMG Certification and consent to a release of legal claims. See Application for ECFMG Certification.

Here is how you apply: http://www.ecfmg.org/2011ib/ibapp.html

😀 Thanks, now I have an ECFMG account but I still have the problem of the school. I'm trying to contact some seniors of my school on that case.
Do you think it'd be ok if I don't have Goljan or anything else except Kaplan notes for Pathology?

Yes, Kaplan should be fine. Goljan is liked by students because he is good at incorporating the pathophysiology along with the path.

I think that as far as ECFMG is concerned, I'm eligible to take the Step 1 exam but I heard that we have to submit a graduate form to the school to get its support. Is it like that in other international medical schools or is it only mine that doesn't give its undergrads a chance? It's so unfair really. 😡
It would be a waste of time to study all over again after graduation...
