I'm considering a veterinary volunteer project in Romania...do you think this will help my application? It will be a 2 month project working in a Romanian clinic.

Well, I suppose any veterinary expierence would help your application, espically if the work you would be doing is an area your application is weak in. Additionally, the fact that the work was in Romania may help your application stand out. So I suppose if you want to go to Romania, this would be something good to further your application while you are there. I don't know if it would mean much more than a domestic veterinary job, however, besides just the fact that it may make your application stand out.

These are just my 2 cents...take them with a grain of salt.

I looked at a vet program in Romania through Projects Abroad. I have a feeling that is the program you are speaking of. I was very excited about doing this, but wanted to get my advisor's opinion before I threw myself into it, since they usually prefer a decent length of trip (at least 1 month...) It can easily take up a whole summer.

She told me that it sounded like a lot of fun, but I needed to be careful and find out more information about the educational background of the vets you will be working with. For instance, if your plan is to possibly have them write a LOR for you, you might want to know their background and be sure they would have a decent reputation to the US adcoms. Otherwise, their opinion may not mean as much as a vet here in the US and therefore your time may be better spent in the US. This point is largely what made me decide not to pursue this experience.

The pro's to this program are you get to see a lot of different stuff - lots of farm animals that you may not see as much of in the US. Also, its supposed to be very hands on which is awesome. The con is ...how would the adcoms view it? I would contact some of the schools you are interested in and see what they think of it. If they say it would be a good and helpful experience, go for it! (And maybe let us know what they say if you do contact them...I am curious)

My bottom line: If you already have good experiences in the US and vets to write you LORs and you just want to possibly diversify your experiences, this could be a great way to do that.🙂

I say that you should absolutely go for it.

In my opinion, admissions committees love to see a well rounded individual, and going abroad (in ANY sense) is wonderful, even more so if you are going to be doing something related to veterinary medicine.

I went to South Africa to do a veterinary program last August and I have never regretted it. It was an amazing, fulfilling experience (granted, playing with lion cubs and darting and moving wildlife was great too).

DO make sure though that if you are going there for veterinary reasons that you learn something (even if it isn't hands-on) that you can take away from the experience.

Where do you find out about programs like these. I would love to do some sort of vet related program abroad this summer

I would love to hear more about the program in South Africa.

Go to:

www.auip.com

It's under the program in South Africa called Vets in the Wild.

It's pricey...but for me it was very worth it. 🙂

One thing that students didn't like about the program is that it wasn't all veterinary all day. But wildlife medicine is as much about working with ecosystems and controlling wildlife as it is about darting and moving animals (which we got to help with). Feel free to contact me with any other questions. Personally, I had a great time. 🙂
