it depends on the program. west coast programs tend to start accepting applications from the beginning of april and may start interviewing in late spring. east coast programs tend to start looking at applications in may with interviews through the summer. programs that have good internal applicants may not accept anyone else. for the more well regarded programs it is typical for applicants to do an away rotation in their PGY-3 year or early PGY-4 as an "audition" and then be invited to accept a position (or not) based on their clinical performance there. there's no match for forensics so interviews and offers are done on a rolling basis. It does help to apply earlier if you have everything in place. people typically apply to 3-4 programs, sometimes more or fewer than that. One letter should be from a forensic psychiatrist. You will typically need to submit a redacted copy of writing sample which could be a forensic report or a report from a clinical visit (e.g. admission note).
