I guess Criminal Background checks are the new way to weed out applicants. I have 2 skeletons in my closet. One day in 05' I worked an 11hr shift and had a date that same night. Had one mixed drink on an empty stomach and was pulled over shortly after. I received a DUI by 1point above the legal limit. I actually rarely drink and this is why this is SO disappointing. Glad the police were doing their job but that was one unlucky year for me.

Up until 2yrs ago I had no clue this was on my record but back in the day when I was 18, I bounced a $14.00 check. My home environment was not ideal so I lived elsewhere and did not get my mail. Needless to say I was summoned to court for this and I guess it was going to be a misdemeanor charge however it was reduced to a small fine. Why does this show on my record all of a sudden? I've never had a prob before? I asked the courts and they have little advice to give. Any suggestions? Diversity is great in dental school but this prob isn't part of their idea of diversity.

For acceptance to Dental school you need to have a clean record.. I advice you to get yourself an online background check and see what comes out!! If something shows up, then you better look for another profession instead of wasting your time on all prerequisites...

slow down debbie downer...maybe actually know what you're talking about before you crush someone's life plans. and OP already did a background check and found what came up...what the heck were you reading?!

OP,
that bounced check is nothing...it's not like you wrote a bad check for $10k, it was 14 dollars! and you were an 18 year old kid on top of that! honestly don't even worry about that. worst case scenario it costs you 15 minutes to type out a letter of explanation

the DUI could be more serious, but you absolutely should contact the schools you plan on applying to directly and ask them. Call in anonymously if you want. It's not going to be any kind of secret though because you'll have to disclose a DUI on your application anyway before the background check even takes place. 2005 isn't exactly ancient history and it does show bad judgement even though it was only one drink (and even if it truly was only one drink, i'm pretty sure everyone who gets a DUI makes that claim). It doesn't have to doom your plans for dentistry necessarily. Call schools and ask, don't rely on random people on this forum who may or may not have ulterior motives. good luck with everything!

I really don't want to give up my dream of being a great dds one day due to silly mistakes. The anonymous call is a good idea. I'm sure many college students get DUI's and it does not stop them from pursuing a career in dentistry.

Definitely call the schools you are interested in and ask them about it. There is a section on the application where it asks about this and you type a response explaining the situation. I think they just want people to be honest and upfront. Especially at your age I am sure you are much more mature now and if I were an adcom I would not hold it against you.
