I know you guys hate to be asked these questions, but-
My bestfriend just got her MCAT scores back-a 22Q overall (7,7,8). She has an awesome science and nonscience GPA - about 3.95-and tons of research experience, and good ECs.

I told her she still had a good shot at getting accepted (she has wanted to apply to DO schools since I turned her on to the profession about 4 months ago). However, she is procrastinating and won't get her AACOMAS app in till this Friday.

My questions-
1. Do you agree with me she has a good chance at acceptance?
2. How many schools should she apply to (at this point in the cycle)?

Sorry to annoy everyone, thanks for your help 👍

I told her to apply to at least 5 schools.

Well, tbh, I think she has a chance, but I don't know how good it is. It's really hard to say, you know? I'd say she'll have to be pretty impressive in the interview, but she does sound solid on the rest of her application. It's just hard to give a definitive answer. I'd encourage her to apply (and return secondaries) to at least 7 schools. She also should be very clear with the adcoms about why she is choosing osteopathic medicine. It can't hurt to apply (except your bank account).

Thanks, JOhnDO-and congrats on your KCOM acceptance!

I know average MCAT at KCOM is like a 26-but at other schools its a 24-I just hope 22 isn't too low for my friend.

:luck:

Maybe consider applying next year. After re-writing.

I am not saying that because she did poorly on MCAT...
(recall I got 21 the first time and re-wrote to get 27).
More so because you introduced this field to her only 4 month ago.
Also the fact that she is procrastinating.. maybe she is trying to
decide on her own. Also it will give her time to meet a DO and get a strong letter.
I don't know what her age is.. so I can't comment on time factor.

Please... don't take this the wrong way.
It is my 2cents and some and you can ignore it if it is not the right answer.

If she has a good gpa and EC's, I think she should apply. My first MCAT score was 22R and I got 1 interview with that (LECOM)...

Thank you everyone for replying.

I'm going to recommend that she apply to 8 schools-and apply to LECOM.

She is procrastinating because she wanted to get her MCAT scores back before applying to a bunch of schools-not because she isn't in love with DO philosophy. She has read Gevitz, shadowed a DO. Many schools do not require a letter from a DO, I have been accepted to three that did not-so I'm not going to suggest she not apply this year because of that factor.

I think she will have a shot and it definately will not hurt her to try. I just haven't been able to update on the accepted post, but I just learned the news that I got accepted at AZCOM by phone yesterday. My stat is close to hers she should have a chance also. Hopefully things will work out for her. Good luck for your friend.
