when medical schools conduct their preliminary screening to decide which apps go straight to the garbage bin, do they consider cGPA, sGPA, or MCAT?

do most places use some sort of formula (similar to the LizzyM formula) and take into consideration of all three?

say a hypothetical applicant has a 3.8 c/s GPA but a 28 MCAT, will he/she get auto screened out? or, take another hypothetical applicant with a 3.5/3.3 and 35 MCAT, will he/she be auto screened out?

Just some anecdotal information here, but 3.5/35+ is competitive. And I believe the 28 will probably hurt him more than a 3.3/3.5 simply because the difference between 28-35 > 3.3-3.8

This is entirely school dependent. There's no one "formula" that is universal; each school uses a different algorithm to decide who to interview.

i understand that its different. but i would hope that the above two instances should be enough to get past most screenings.

OP,

based on the content of all the threads you've made thus far, I can say with 99% certainty that you're not getting into medical school

Good luck 👍

Median = 3.6/32
3.8/28 is 2 LizzyM below median
3.5/35 is 2 LizzyM points above median
3.3/35 is right at median

Why rule out people based on quality of their threads instead of their posts per day count?

i know someone this cycle with a 3.5/3.4 and a 37 R MCAT but she had a honor code violation (academic-related, led to a semester probation) and as of the end of November, she still hasn't received a single II yet. she applied to almost 40 schools (not an exaggeration)

do schools auto trash apps marked with IAs and/or criminal convictions (regardless of the types of infractions and how competitive the app is as a whole) along with low numbers in the prelim round?

if that's the case, then there seems little incentive to even apply with an IA.

You're adding another factor here, so that makes it more complicated. Listen to Doctor Strange: different schools have different procedures for evaluating applicants.

I have an IA (academic) and below a 3.1 GPA. I know URM helps balance out low stats, but I doubt it compensates much for IAs.

did u get asked about the IA during interviews? or did the schools just write it off?

I did at open file. Most were closed file though.

i can see that. but she hasn't gotten a single II yet and that's given great stats and close to 40 apps.

and is it normal for ppl to apply to 40 schools?? that seems pretty insane. the average number of applications at my undergrad is in the low teens, and my schools is known as a fairly good/competitive feeder school.

When did she apply? 40 schools is a ton and if she applied early with those stats I highly doubt the IA is the only thing wrong with her app.

It's what it sounds like. Open=interviewer has access to your file, closed= they don't know anything about you.

Yup. And then there's the in between where they have your essays but no stats or other stuff on AMCAS.

almost all mid tier schools. i believe the highest ranked school she applied to is mayo.

some of her schools include NYMC, rosalind franklin, tulane, drexel, jefferson, loma linda, mount sinai, mayo, etc...

her ECs are all very solid, as far as i know. she didnt have a lot of research , but i doubt that's the thing since she didnt apply to research intensive schools at all. she went to the same school as i did, and she was a volunteer leader at the part of the hospital i volunteered at. she did over three years worth of clinical ECs at that hospital place, and she has a leadership role in it. i wont go into more specifics, but her ECs are above average at worst.

and she sent in her primary early june, so definitely early and broadly

ah i see.

i am surprised that schools would interview you without knowing anything about ur stats/activities.

congrats on your acceptance, but what makes you say this?

The school knows your stats. The people interviewing you don't.

Professionalism IA's and convictions for offenses related to lying, stealing, cheating or harming people are dealbreakers in every place I've served: falling below acceptable GPA, not so much.

and what are professionalism IAs? does that include alcohol infractions, drug issues, and other miscellaneous things?

Umm what? I've been "awfully catty" since I joined this forum. I knew I was getting into medical school, it was only a matter of which one. Thanks for trying...

mirin?

I was joking, but you just make some slightly odd threads.

haha i see

It depends. Some schools give you an IA for normal sexual behaviors or ETOH use of any kind. This is minor.
Plagiarism, cheating on tests, fighting, property destruction, stalking...another thing entirely.
