Hey everyone. I don't come here often, but recent things have come up which concern me. My fiancee and I are the same major (biology) and we are applying right now to medical school. She just got her April MCAT scores back, and its looking like we might have to see out a post-bac program for her. We will most likely be both going to Loma Linda in Cali, but our home is Maryland. We really want to come back to Maryland for residency though. So it just came to me that if I am a year ahead of her in medical school, then that means that I will be doing my residency in Maryland at the same time that she is doing her 4th year in Cali. Is there anyway around this? Can postpone my residency a year for those reasons? Has anyone been through this (having one person in a residency far away and another in 4th year of medical school)? Thanks alot in advance.

As far as I know, you can postpone but then you would be entering the match as a non-trad student. I know someone that just did that bc she had a baby in her last year of med school and wanted to stay home.

my husband and i are friends with a couple who did something similar. while she was finishing up med school, he did research for a year in his anticipated speciality. and then they both applied this year for residency. and had no problems getting in to their desired couple's choice

yeah, taking a year to do research is the only thing I can think of. But it wouldn't be horrible to remain 1 year apart. She'll be in her 4th year and from what I hear, it's a breeze, so she'll probably have lots of time to travel to see you.

Good luck!!

My one question is why to you assume she will be doing post-bacc courses? Did she fail the exam? Or get a score less than 200? If so then she should prepare for and take the August exam. You two may still start school at the same time... have faith... but be realistic. I have many friends who were married before going to med school and one started before the other. Taking a year off between med school and residency is do-able, and is not looked down upon as much as some would lead you to believe. Especially if you are doing so in order to couples match.

I thought MCAT scores were usuallly between 20 and 50. Am I missing something here?

lol... you are soooo right... I some times suffer from the fat finger malady that occasionally morphs into the stuttering fat finger malady. Thanks for pointing it out.
