It's a minor error:
"Starting Spring 2010, I became research assistant for X lab."
instead of "I became a research assistant for X lab."

Will it destroy my chances...? 🙁

Not sure if you are serious or not, but no, it's not a big deal.

It may be OK for low-tier and DO schools, but your chances at any other MD school are basically zero. Top schools want top applications, so no grammar.or spelling errors are allowed. Sorry OP.

You are the only person who will care as long as there isn't a ton of other grammatical errors. I mean I used "aid" instead of "aide" in one of my essays and have II's from school I submitted that secondary too.

Sorry, but to those who think this will sink the app at great schools. NO, it won't.

I guess you're an old-timer doc. Well, you'll find your way in the internet and SDN.

42. Chair of a Department. I was one of the original posters in 1996 on the Internet about getting into medical school on the Princeton Review website....you obviously haven't eaten your helping of humble pie...

That's great. All that's left is to be used to how the internet forums work. 😉

FYI. I usually don't question/criticize any attending/resident/intern etc, because I adhere to the medical hierarchy. Premed bashing, however, is a common practice, because the journeg starts in medical school, not college. The point here is sarcasm is perfectly valid here because this thread was discussed numerous times in different forms. OP very well knew the answer to his own question.

And yet you still haven't figured out how internet forums work.

Just FYI, I don't eat dessert.

No. The forums were a lot friendlier when I was on years ago. There was a lot less sarcasm, more support, etc. If someone asked for advice, it was generally well received and the replies were sincere....guess I am on old timer even though I am not old...

Check out the subforums outside of pre-professional. Allo/clinical/Step/residency forums have this sincerity you're seeking. Same in preallo, but sadly too many redundant threads are far too prevalent and the failure to use the search function is a common problem.

I did something similar at a top md school, and called them. They said it wouldn't be a problem, and now I have an interview there

I honestly didn't catch it the first time I read the sentence and it took you pointing it out and another 2 times of reading it to find the error. The reason being that I am extremely busy and just casually looked it over. Guess what, the application readers will be busy too. They will not sit there and critique every single word (or lack of) that you write as long as it isn't noticeable.

I think you will be fine.

There is a lot of support and sincere posts here too. I usually just ignore the sarcastic posts and respond to the OP, you just have to ignore it/laugh at it and continue to contribute in the way that you want. The Internet world is a lot different now than it was in 1996...

This definitely seems like a troll post but in case it's not and OP is just that misguided, I had a 5 typos over the course of 3 essays for a school (I realized during recycling/modification of other essays and was terrified) but was still granted an interview.

I have had a typo(s) in 2/2 secondaries that have resulted in interviews. I had a typo in my primary so I really had a typo for 3/3 schools that will interview me (one didn't have a secondary with essays).

I was so upset when I found them, but now I feel much better. Of course, maybe I haven't gotten an interview from the other 15ish schools I applied to because of that primary typo. 😉

My point is...don't think it matters much. These schools know you a writing a tons of essays, and they are reading even more. To be honest, I bet they don't catch all of the typos just due to the volume they have to read.

Thanks everyone!

No, I wasn't trolling. I myself felt pretty sure that it would be okay. (The worst part is knowing I spent so much time on that secondary and somehow let it slip by).

I did have some concern that it would significantly and negatively affect my chances though, because I gave a copy of my CV to one of my letter writers, who, at our next meeting, scolded me for writing "various phenotype" instead of "various phenotypes". It was kind of nasty: "How can you be accepted into a top MD/PhD program if you can't be detail oriented enough to proofread your own CV??? No program will want you if they can't take you seriously."
But it's also in that prof's nature to have super high expectations for his students cause he really cares about them.

Thanks for clearing this up for me, everyone!

The sarcasm was fine, and actually reassuring. 🙂
