Not at all screwed. That's life, and believe it or not tons of applicants miss pre-interview dinners throughout the season and are still ranked highly. It's not a big deal at all.

Pre-Interview dinner...damn all I got was pre-interview nausea from the air freshener in the uber...

You're good though. Just don't miss the actual interview...

I haven’t missed a dinner yet, but I’ve been to enough where only a few residents show up and there isn’t much food (in many cases, only appetizers) and I wish I had just taken the little time I had the evening before to see the area instead. Showing up for me is just due diligence, but I doubt it makes a difference on their end, and it rarely changes my impression of the program. I wouldn’t worry about missing one.

No biggie.

The biggest value I found in the dinners was a chance to hang out with the residents socially and get to know people and see how well I fit. Obviously you get this interview day too, but it’s such a short time overall that I personally found the extra hours valuable. It’s also a great time to feel out how well the residents get along with each other.

Some programs kinda phone in the social with minimal attendance. At ours we have about 90% of our residents attend and probably 50-60% of faculty. We also hold it in fun venues to show off our city a bit, so people who miss it might only get to see the airport and our hospital if they’re on a tight schedule overall.

Again, not a big deal as far as how they rank for us, but can be important for the applicants when they sit down to make their own rank list in a few weeks.
