i interviewed at columbia a while ago, and have heard from many people that Dean Frantz is the one that makes the decisions about the incoming class. our tour guide mentioned this a couple of times, too.

how true is that? are people more likely to get accepted if they were interviewed by him? so, if we were interviewed by someone else, is that detrimental to our application?

Everyone I talked to Columbia wasn't interviewed by Dean Frantz and still got in. While it's probably true that he makes the decision, I don't think it really makes a difference whether or not you interview with him.

While I was in the waiting area during my Columbia interview, one of the med students came in and told us that when he was interviewed by Dr. Frantz, Dr. Frantz fell asleep during the interview! This guy may get the final say on decisions, but its not always a good thing because what if he dislikes you for no reason?

This was discussed ad nauseum last year so if you want to know how people did in relation to who interviewed them do a search on Columbia during last years acceptance period.

The final analysis however was that although Dean Franz makes final decisions being interviewed by him has no correlation to acceptance or rejection. The only difference seemed to be people that asked him for a 'second interview' to try and persuade him to let them off the waitlist only got a 2nd one if he wasn't the person who originally interviewed them as he hadn't met them before.

no

I had Dr. Frantz for my interview at Columbia. While I was in the waiting room, I mentioned that I was interviewing with Dr. Frantz and all of the students had this stunned look on their faces. Many of them told me that Dr. Frantz has a lot of influence on the admissions committee. Dr. Frantz is a real nice guy but I doubt that an interview with another faculty member will have any significant impact on your application chances.

Frantz makes the decisions. Interviews with Frantz are great. The letter you get back after you write a thankyou note is great, particularly if it has a little scrawl of a note at the bottom.

Also you can call late in the cycle when you are on the waitlist and ask - hey what are my chances, and he will tell you. Frantz likes LOI's.
