So..this is the brutal science semester for me...hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after that. I'm thinking about rushing and maybe joining a frat for the next semester...and i'm just wondering about how the lifestyle is.

any Fraternity/sorority pre-med's out there?

I graduated last year and was a member of a sorority. I had many friends in a frat and I know that the semester you pledge is your most involved semester of the frat. However, many of my friends went on to hold leadership positions in their fraternity (president etc) and entered med school. You HAVE to be able to manage your time and prioritize what is important. Your freshman year is the best year to obtain and maintain a high gpa. After that it only gets harder to raise it. pm me if you have more questions.

Well, I guess it depends on what area of the country you're from. In my experience, greek life involves lots and lots and lots of drinking. And (at least in Oregon) quite a bit of weed and coke as well. I wasn't in a sororiety, but I had a lot of friends who rushed. I thought the houses were a little bit creepy, to be honest, but again it totally depends where you go to college. Frats in your area might be less based on partying. Or you might be more interested in partying than I am. 😉

i don't suggest pledging the same semester ur hard science classes are in. frats are a great way for networking and making friends, but prioritizing is essential.

Yeah... I've been the vice president, then president of my fraternity for the past two years. Talk about take a chunk of my time. I've enjoyed it though, although it kinda screwed my GPA up alittle.

You need to evaluate WHY you would want to join such an organization.

Do you not have a solid group of friends already? Are they plying you with free food and beer?

Do you have some spare money and time to piss away on people that deep down don't really care at all about you?

Don't waste your time with greek life. It's lame, they're lame, who cares.

Make real friends instead of paying for them. The pledging process is a totally artificial means of bringing your pledge class together. Put everyone in the same stressful environment and situation, and they'll band together.
You want your mind f*cked with like that?

You're better than that.

Greek life sucks.

i dont know too much about greek life, but cant you just go the parties without being a member? dont sacrifice your grades for anticipated debauchery.

Yes you can!

Milk those parties for all they're worth! All the fun without having to clean up! 😀

Greek life is great. I've been a member of my fraternity for 3 years now. Pledgeship can be hard, but it's worth it. You have to find a house that is consistent with your values though. Go somewhere that will encourage and support your pre-med ambitions.

ya i only took one science class the semester i pledged and one the next semester. you're gonna spend more time partying the semester you're initiated than the time you put in pledging. thats my experience. either way do it if you're cool with the kids in the house. thats all that matters.

you're asking geeks about their experience being greek.

think about that.

then when you're done thinking, shotgun a beer and go rush the frat. you only live once, college is the time for you to let loose and have fun. don't worry so damn much, and just stop and enjoy the ride. you'll regret it if you don't.

Chinorlz,

I was in a fraternity and made some of the best friends of my life there. Your point of view is really....rediculous. And unfair. Have a bad experience, perhaps?

In my experience, people within the fraternities are open to having friends outside of the system. Its the people on the outside -- people like you -- who do most of the bashing and who are the most intolerant.

Hey OP, I don't know what you're thinking trying to join a "frat". Do you call your country a "****"? Didn't think so. Good luck trying to find a fraternity that'll take someone as disrespectful as you

I would suggest rushing and meeting the guys in the frat, because every school is different. I have been in a pre-med sorority since I was a freshman, and would not give it up for anything. It's not a traditional social frat/sorority, and not affiliated with the panhelenic (sp?) organization at all, but networking with a wide-variety of girls is awesome, and I've also held leadership positions for the past two years. Everything is what you make of it though...good luck!

Frats are great for pre-meds.....

after you get cirrhosis and genital warts or herpes, you will be a good patient model when you begin medical school.....

one of my freinds insists that, frats are for poeple who want to buy friends", somone already said something similar to this.

i hear that they have past tests for classes? is this true??? humm maybe i should join one...... JK

also, the frat houses look pretty ****ty, most of the dorms are even better.

I second that...while it is a generalization, the vast majority of frat guys I have met are total douches. Make friends on your own.

Or you could just live in a clean apartment by yourself. No rules. No drunks. No messes that aren't yours.

i have to defend frats. as long as you find one that fits your personality you will have a great time. it all depends on the school though, there may be one you like and if there is check it out. but dont join a frat your uncomfortable with just for the sake of joining. as far as academics, i know that wasnt really a problem. of the three kids in my pledge class that applied senior year, 2 went to columbia and 1 went to hopkins, so they were obviously able to get their $hit done and still have a good time.

Again, I would listen to those people that are in fraternities. Someone can't give you an accurate description of greek life if they've never been involved. Don't be scared away, it could be an incredible experience.

Not everyone knows that "frat" has become a disrespectful word. 🙄

You don't need to freak out! :scared:

Bluto: My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.
Otter: Better listen to him, Flounder. He's pre-med.
