Does anyone know what ad-comms think about greek organizations? I know there are social and professional (e.g. fraternities for philanthropy and business/chem/engineering) but is there any sort of preference or leg-up? I know the Dean of Admissions and several ad-comm members at Creighton were in Alpha Chi Sigma (Professional Chemistry) but I dunno if it really helps or not.

I'm a Kappa Kappa Gamma. I actually had a Dr. interview me at Wake who was a Kappa too. Can't hurt your application, especially if you were an officer, as long as you don't talk about it too much. It is a social organization after all

I dont know if it will give you any advantage, but if you are a brother it wont hurt you... I am in AXSigma and several of my essays were about the leadership roles that I have been given within the organization.

If you are a brother, you could always email them and mention something about axsigma.. I am sure they would love to hear your opinion on Cag or Geber... if you are not a memeber you have no clue what I am talking about 😳

Fraternities are like any EC you stick on your AMCAS app--be prepared to discuss it in an interview. If you really want to get into it, put it in the personal statement. Don't, however, join a fraternity because you somehow think that it makes you a 'better rounded' person, because you'll have a miserable time and suffer for no good reason.

DrYo has a good point. Don't join one b/c you think you'll look well rounded and good.

I remember filling out a secondary and they specifically wrote to not put down fraternities/sororities as an EC. I don't remember which school this was though. I'm not exactly sure if it's frowned upon - especially since through my experience, people gain a lot of leadership and organizational experience through these groups. Just follow DrYo's guidance and you should be fine. 🙂

I think the experience is different for everyone - not all sororities/fraternities are filled with binge drinking/hazing/party animals.

Some of my experiences with my old sorority really helped me develop leadership experience, etc. However, we were a pretty laid back group of girls.

I met tons of amazing people both in and out of the whole greek system. Labels aren't really necessary.

Seriously though, what valor is there in a social frat/sorority? They throw parties that are exclusive and give undue self-importance, and for "service" they just pay money once, maybe twice a semester.

I'm sorry but, from the outside it looks to be all about the image, about being part of something "special" when in reality anyone with the $ and shallowness can get in.

Yes, these are stereotypes, and undoubtedly there are genuinely good people in the greek system. But from all I've gained from 4 years of undergrad, the stereotypes are constanly enforced.

#2) For a person who claims to celebrate open-mindedness (as opposed to the "exclusivity" of the greek system), you sure known how to drop sweeping judgements on people you've never met.
#3) I didn't have the money, and my organization payed my way for most of my stay. And our charity raised a serious amount of cash for the American Heart Association.

The folks I know in the greek system don't sit around and bitch about independants. Seems to go the other way, as is so painfully displayed by the tone of your post.

I'm not saying sometimes the greek system isn't shallow and elitist but it does do some good and on top of that I too have never heard a Greek say "That person isn't in a frat/sorority...what's wrong with them?! They suck." but I hear plenty of independents trash Greeks.

On a side note, professional fraternities are good for networking with like-minded people with similar interests. At huge schools clubs are an excellent way to make friends. Also, a lot of clubs have dues of some sort so whats the difference between paying to be a part of the fencing club vs a greek organization. Often the greeks have nice houses you get to hang out in with big screen TVs, magazines, pool/foosball tables, and even former test banks that help in studying. I really see no downside.

Sigma Kappa, also in APO but I don't consider it a real greek organization. i joined EK because they are very devoted to a specific philanthropy that I personally feel strongly about - alzheimers research. The girls in my sorority strive to have good grades and active social lives, while helping other people through philanthropic events. I know on the outside maybe all anybody sees is the social aspect, but there is so much more to greek life than just that. I am not saying it's bad to NOT be greek, to each his own, I just don't feel it is fair that people bash us so quickly without knowing what it's really all about. I'm in a sorority because I care about my grades and our specific philanthropy, and YES I also enjoy going out and being social. I don't see what's wrong with that?

It's a house that a bunch of emotionally stunted dudes live in together, you don't need to defend it with your dying breath. "They're my brothers!" haha, "help" in studying. The two frat guys in my chemE class only managed to squeak through because their house had tons of past homework assignments and tests to copy from. In a major that relies primarily on take-home work (as opposed to in-class exams) due to the complexity of the subjects covered, having that stuff lying around meant you could get any grade you wanted on the tests.

There is no point in arguing over this issue. Agreed the Truth is out there.
We, fraternity members, do know that and are always trying to put a positive image (i.e. those of who realize that Frat image needs an uplifiting) by "not" doing silly things/promoting silly behavior

this coming from a person who has admited on SDN to not being much of a people-person... Hey, social organizations aren't for everyone, so there's no reason to hate my friend

Give me the percentage of fraternity people who engage in rape versus people who live in dorms or apartments. Where are you drawing this statistic from?

Actually, the stats ARE higher for fraternities. Why? Because those are the kind of people that fraternities attract, along with all the other meatheads with no socially redeeming characteristics. Yeah, sure, fraternities were noble organizations back when they were founded, but things have changed since the 1800s.

And sure, you may be involved in some philanthropic activities, but only because you are forced to do so by the fraternity, and only because the people who founded fraternities and make you do these things were respectful people. Yes, some people in fratearnities are benevolent caring people who enjoy helping out others, but theres definitely a large percentage of *****s involved in the Greek system that ruin any possible credibility you could have kept.

It's no surprise that several girls get drugged and/or raped at fraternity parties every year at my university, yet you never hear about any situations at the local dorms.
