(1) Choosing a career based primarily on financial prospect is similar to marrying someone for money. Unless you like the job or the person, it will feel pretty miserable after a few years, once that initial gratification is gone. Believe me, it takes a LOT of "LIKE" to do something continuously for 30-40 years.

(2) Pharmacy will become more competitive, but the need for pharmacists will always exist. Rule of evolution: "Nature selects from itself for itself." Same thing goes for this profession. Regardless how tough the market will get, the top % of the pack will always be valued and sought after.

This is a question i've always had. What's the difference between a good pharmacist and a great pharmacist?

just got my financial aid/tuition info today... my tuition will total ~70K and worst case scenario (if i work 0 hours during pharm school with no scholarships) i'm looking at $110 in loans. pretty scary stuff, and this is my state school as well. get ready to dive in!

Dive in??? You mean bend over? I would add an extra $500+ in expenses for this year. Thats what happened to me. I thought I had everything but soon I started getting emails telling me I had to pay for clinical pharmacology and a bunch of other stuff thoughtout the year. Plus tuition at 👍our school goes up by $1k every year. So lube up my friend.

yeah, i built in an extra grand or so per year for unexpected expenses. i can't believe how expensive the in-state tuition is... we're approaching californiaeque prices now. are you at the main campus?

I'd shoot myself in the foot to only have 110 k in debt when I'm done. And I go to a state school. 110k is nothing, you can't even buy a house with that.

If you do something purely for the cash...your happiness will be dictated by the cash. Do something you truly like, and the cash will be a side-effect rather than a focus. Who knows, 4-5 years down the road, you may kick yourself for entering a monetarily volatile profession. Be true to yourself and do something that will be fulfilling for the rest of your life.

that doesnt solve the issue of all these schools opening and pumping out graduates. that is like a 1 yr band-aid.

the problem comes down to the schools and graduates. unfortunately since it is so desired now

1.) bachelor degree should be required like in medicine (you dont see too many without it going to medicine)

2.) also, there needs to be an expansion of the scope of practice of pharmacy. immunizations are not going to save your ass. you need some sort of collaborative practice agreement. not just that, but add on 1 more year to pharmacy to give you the abilities that PA's have. That way you are not only a drug expert, but you can also SHOW IT...... If you want that role but not be forced into it.

3.) there is a shortage of quality primary care, perhaps looking at that and trying to get involved there with an expanded scope is what will improve pharmacy. immunizations is not going to save your ass neither is MTM.

4.) tighter restrictions on schools. Make the programs with 2 different routes of study if there is an expanded practice. 1 route can be a clinically based route along with patient care focused, the other can be a retail orientated route

5.) higher standards for schools. If you are going to offer microbiology, LAB MUST BE MANDATORY, none of these classes with no labs, that is just silly.

6.) Limit class sizes, no more diploma mills

I agree with you. We need to as a profession do something to show congress we need funding and we are important and qualified to take over parts of primary care. We need to show how we save the government money. The community needs to know to come to us and use our services. The only way to go is expanding the field, that's the way to open up jobs. There isn't enough PharmD's representing us when writing legislature.
