Hey guys, earlier this semester, I made a thread asking for tips on doing well in biochem. Well, I would like to proudly say that I am currently getting an A- after 2 rounds of midterms. Very excited. However, I've always heard 2 things about biochem: amino acids (done) and glycolysis (up next).

We are about to start glycolysis next week and I browsed through the notes and it looks scary! 10 separate reactions and each has its OWN SECTION of notes!!! 😱 I got some great learning tips for memorizing amino acids. Just want to know if anyone has any tips for memorizing, understanding, and doing well with glycolysis.

Lastly, am I responsible for memorizing the chemical reactions of each step in glycolysis? Basically, do I need to use o-chem knowledge and draws arrows and bonds for the 10 reactions. AHHHH! o-chem nightmare flashbacks! 😕

glycolysis is not that difficult. if you know the structure of glucose, you'll see that the breakdown of it to pyruvate is very understandable.

don't fret it. just wait until the pentose phosphate pathway, krebs, ETC...

my Biochem teacher literally gave us a blank sheet of paper and told us to draw all steps and structures of glycolysis. It's not all that bad once you understand what exactly is happening at each step.

Good luck!

Buy the Lippincott's Biochem book and the material will be easy.

Congrats on the current A-, keep it up.

depends on your professor if you need to show the reaction in terms of Ochem. not glycoysis i think...if you had to take the second part of biochem then you might need to brush up on ochem, but biochem is sort of a short version of ochem. you dont really show the whole reaction. to help memorize the glycolysis cycle and tca, etc... i bought a white board and just kept rewriting it until i get it right...way more mechanisms in biochem II if u think glycolysis is scary

Look on the bright side, you only need to know this useless crap tangentally in pharm school when you do diabetes management in Pcology/patho/therapeutics. Honestly, just a minimal conceptual understanding is sufficient. I couldn't name an intermediate or enzyme in that cycle to save my life and I got something like a 97% on the DM module in patho.

You poor thing, why would they make you memorize freakin' glycolysis? They never did that with us. I feel sorry for ya. Good luck anyway.

This is something you really should ask your professor.

I had to memorize the cycle, but definatly not the structures of each molecule.

Thanks guys for the replies. After lecture today, I realized we don't need to memorize the structures and arrow pushing for the reactions. Just be able to recognize and spell the structures. All I remember today was glucose-6-phosphate and hexokinase is the first enzyme for the 1st rxn.

OK, off to study. I'll check out that book suggested earlier. Thanks again everyone.
