Okay, so you probably see posts like this a lot but my question actually involves transferring. I currently attend the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse and my current major is Chemistry. I love Chemistry, but really love medicine and I want to go to Medical school. My question is should I apply and transfer to the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities? I have a couple personal reasons to do this but my main thinking is that the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities is a better schooling for pre-med, is this correct? Would me attending the UMN look that much better on a college transcript vs. UWLAX? Currently I am working 20 hours a week at a non related, part time job and I'm a full time student. At midterms I had a 4.0 GPA and as far as I know this is still true. When should I decrease hours at work and find related work to help my application into Medical School? Finally, how would you suggest going about finding this work?

Thank you in advance for your assitance.

Where you go to school doesn't really matter for med school admission, so don't transfer if you are only doing it to impress med schools. However, if you feel Minnesota is a better fit for you than UW-Lacrosee, then by all means transfer there. It sounds like you are doing great at UW-Lacrosse, so I would probably stay there, unless you really do not like it. Good luck!

I don't see a real reason you would want to transfer beside the personal reasons. If the personal reasons are compelling then you should transfer. Fortunately it is still early in your academic career and it is likely you won't lose too many credits from transferring.

I don't know much about UW-Lacrosse but I'm a senior at UMN. If you're interested in research, UMN is a great place to be. They really support undergraduate research...you can't walk ten feet without bumping into a research grant.

For those on the pre-med track specifically, the U is mediocre. There's no pre-med committee, the health careers office is miniscule, and the pre-med clubs are so huge and bloated that you might as well be going to a first year chemistry lecture.

So, if you want to transfer, do it because the U is a great research university with an awesome location. For pre-med, it's nothing special.

Alright, thank you all for your replies and I will definitely have to reconsider my thoughts on transferring!

Going to UMN might help if you wanted to stay in Minnesota down the line, but it probably doesn't make much difference beyond that. If you're a Wisconsin resident, you've got a solid chance at UWisc or MCW, and they're probably not going to care if you went to La Crosse or UMN. You will be rejected if you're a Vikings fan though.

Yeah, I am a Minnesota resident and live within 45 minutes of the UMN. I love the area but I didn't want such a large school, then I got to thinking and I think I might enjoy it.

If you think you will be happier, and enjoy your transfer school then go for it, but don't read into beyond that.

Go to the cheapest school that you will be happy at.
