Hi, everyone. I just got my final grades for the second semester of my freshman year and I'm terrified about my chances of getting into med-school.

My first semester was iffy-- I was adjusting to the whole deal of limitless freedom and what not. These are the grades I ended up getting:
Calculus I: B
Chemistry I Honors: B
Honors English I: B
Bio I-- Cell Structure and Function: B-

This is my second semester:
Honors English II: A-
Animal Biology: A
Chemistry II Honors: C

Right now my GPA is an unfortunate 3.03. I'm very lost at the moment and I want to know what I have to do for the rest of my college career in order to maximize my chances of getting into a good medical school. I know I can do better, seeing as I buckled down and tried harder for my classes and went from B's to A's, but Chem II Honors really kicked me in the rear. Last month my oldest brother passed away very suddenly and I am still suffering from the shock. I think this could have had a major impact on my studying habits for Chemistry, especially since it's the subject I have the most trouble with.

I am taking Calc II this summer and I'm going to try my very hardest to ace that class.

Can anyone please give me any tips or advice? Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.

Try and identify why you did worse than you think you could have and what you can do next semester to get a gpa your proud of. If that means taking a lighter load, then take an easier schedule. Also, its better to have good grades than to take honors classes. I would have never taken honors chem. but thats just me. Sorry to hear about your brother. You can address that issue in your personal statement.

Don't worry about the rest of it until you figure out how to get straight As. In a year, you could have your GPA up to 3.5, and each additional year will get it higher. An A- or better GPA is your highest priority. Every B you get sets back the time it will take for you to be ready to apply to med school.

Just move forward. The adjustment period is basically over now and you'll continually become a better student as you do more work. It takes time to learn how you best study. Be more sad that the experience of freshmen year is over because nothing will ever be like that again.

qft.

OP, I wouldn't worry too much, you haven't dug yourself into that deep of a hole yet. However, you will need to buckle down for organic and physics, 150%. 👍
