Who do you think would win in a classic Pathology battle? The famous Goljan or the infamous Pathology guy?? 😎 discuss.

Well Having been taught by both, I would have to say its a toss up.

Friedlander, or ERF, as I know him as better is way smart when it comes to pathology. He is quite "unique" to say the least when it comes to his personality but he does know his pathology. He can look at a histo slide and diagnose so easily and he can look at general gross path and dx as easily. He is rather abstract when it comes to teaching path but some people dig this about him. I think if you spent a year or two working with him on a daily basis you would really increase you field of pathology greatly.

Goljan on the other hand is a straight arrow "professor" type. He is kind of funny at times as well. He also knows his pathology and a bonus for him is that he can teach at a level that can benefit the "not so" talented in path or pathophysiology and he can teach at the level that fits the "stellar" students in pathology and pathophysiology. He is also a fatherly figure. He was exceptional in his board review course and I found it to be wonderful for Step 1.

So all in all, I would call it a toss up. It all depends on how you like to learn and what field of medicine you are going into. If you are deadset on a being a pathologist, I think ERF might be the best for overall and even wacky pathology knowledge. If you are deadset on any other field and need a basic and thorough general Path and Pathophysiology, then I think Goljan would be a good choice. So when you add all of it up, its a Toss Up!!!

Who's Friedlander? Don't let p53 know. He/she'll go listen to all of his audio recordings simultaneously with Goljan.

Friedlander is listed in First Aids'(2005) student review section just under Kaplan Qbank, and Webpath.

Friedlander will teach you so much that you will be amazed when you fail boards.

Seriously, even Goljan says that this guy is so far out there...he definitely knows his stuff, but that 'stuff' is not what is tested on boards. I read it all, and it is very entertaining and informative though. Didnt help me one lick for exams.

Not meant to be an attack, I dont think that all instruction has to be geared towards board exams, but you do a disservice if you dont prep your students for it. Goljan starts Path on Day one with an explanation of what to expect, and I would say that he gives quite a bit of stuff 'for boards only' with the expressed instructions to forget it as soon as you leave the test. BTW, you also get a very sound working knowledge of Pathology along the way.

Just my thoughts.

Don't pick on p53 whats wrong with you..............p53 would never listen to stolen copyright protected material...................he has written permission from Goljan himself to listen to his bootleg audio............either way its not wrong to borrow and listen to stolen content its just wrong to steal it yourself and listen..........................................

I have never been taught by Goljan, but I have to say that I feel completely prepared for boards with what Dr. Friedlander has taught us. Sure he tests over some wacky things sometimes, but he requires you to think above and beyond multiple choice questions. He knows everything about pathology and quite a lot about practically everything else. If you pay attention and actually try to do well in path, then he will do a fantastic job at imparting the knowledge you need. He definitely does not spoon feed it to you.
KCUMB-COM class of 2007

Friedlander's an enigma, interesting, complex and full of knowledge. But if I did it again, I'd pick Goljian. Actually, these days, I'd like to have both of them in my pocket.
